Do a search I posted some links a couple of months ago in response to the same question, I didn't save the links so I can't post them here now, but yes they are different, they use a magnetic pickup signal from pulses on the fuel lines. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I am working and I make good money and I still can't afford much, but he reason is I have 9 vehicles as opposed to 1. I have 3 running OH [censored] I FORGOT now down to 2 I broke my Jeep this weekend. So 7 projects left not running.

CarQuest offers a diesel tach made by Stewart-Warner.
It has a 0-3500 rpm range with 3 3/8" face. Magnetic pickup gets its signal from the teeth on the ring gear.
Tach is about $120, sender $35.
I could get the Part numbers if you like.

I have an Isspro 0-4000rpm tach. It uses a magnetic pickup on the balancer. I got it from KD. I have had it for 2 years and works good.

    I use Isspro's EGT gauges.
I didn't care for their tach offerings, don't like the small 2" face. Also I'd like to keep the balancer clean for using the stock pickup of the cummins for my tach signal for the 4L80E.
