The best way is a magnetic crank sensor setup. One or two companies sell them, about $250. If I ever remember the name of the company I will let you know.

Isspro makes a magnetic pick up which cost about 50 bucks, It uses magnets glued to your balancer to generate a signal for the tach. I think you can get the whole setup (pick up and gauge) for about $150 from various different vendors.
    cheers, rugger

Edited because my illiterate stunt double replied to a post with asking me first

I installed one on my brothers 6.2 that is made by Stewart-Warner. Car-Quest carries them and the tach has a nice large 3 3/8 diameter face. The sensor picks up the teeth on the ring gear. Had to weld up the dust cover a little so the jam nut would have a smooth mounting surface is all.
    Diesel tach #CPS 80588 +/-$120
    Mag pickup #CPS 80816 +/-$35
    Has a 0-3500 rpm range.

I just installed the TINYTACH $65 plus shipping.
Total under $100 and it also records hours of use.
    I like it.
I will try and find the link for you. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I can get the 3 1/2" stewart-warner 0-3500 tach for $98 brand new at work. (Oreillys Warehouse) It has the chrome face ring and all. /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif
