tail ights work, rear turn indicators and brake lights don\'t

Took the truck in for the "test" inspection. Even with a full visual under the hood, they somehow missed the smog pump without a belt! But... my brake lights and rear turn indicators are no longer working. Although, the tail lights work. Where do I even start on this? The front turn indicators do work. Help!

I had/have the same danged problem. I took of my rear light covers and took everything 100% apart and found about 700lbs of dirt, dust and mud. Thinking this may have something to do with it I cleaned it all up and put it back together. By this time I had already checked all the fuses and such but when I checked her I still had the same problem. I just parked the damned thing and have been so busy I haven't messed with it since. If you figure it out you get an A++++. If not I wont hold it against you I've talked with many that have had this same problem and have yet to figure it out. If you do figure it out post it here and e-mail me please.

[IMG] ps: I just now noticed you have a '85 gmc jimmy! it was my '85 jimmy that gave me the same b.s. [IMG]

I don't have the stock taillights in my blazer.I have round ones in the tailgate. But I have had this problem a couple of times.Once it was in the fuse box all of the connections were rusty.Cleaned the fuses and terminals and all was fine.Another time it was in the wireing in the rear. The wires are exposed underneath and tend to get ruinned from weather or mud or snow.Or check for extra wires for a trailer.Mine had trailer wires that were put together with crappy connections.Since the fronts are working it is probally in the wiring in the rear.hope this helps.Brady

Re: tail ights work, rear turn indicators and brake lights don\'t

Well, good news. I pulled everything apart and cleaned it all. Still wasn't working. Checked the bulb, both filaments were intact. Got out the meter. Found a good ground an hot lead for the tail light. Other wire must be the blinker/brake. Yep. With the meter, I found that wire to toggle hot/cold with the blinkers on. Checked the contacts inside the bulb mount and they were showing to work. Really puzzled. Dug up spare bulb in the glove compartment. Thought, what the hell. Sure enough, it worked! Put it in the other side (it's filaments were intact as well) and it worked there, too. On my way to Walmart now for spare bulbs. Bulb was bad even thought filaments were intact.

Either I lost them both at once, or I have been without one and didn't notice and finally lost the other. Funny thing, while testing, found out my turn/backup fuse was only 10A when it should have been 15. Getting more of those, too, as it blew during my testing!

    Thanks for the responses!

They always seem to go out in twos... least mine do... both times they burnt out it was at the same time (I had no clue because I see them lit but didn't know the brake part was dead)... lucky I had a nice policeman stop me both times to point this out! [IMG]

I had a similar problem with my 73 and it turned out to be a wire had worked loose on the steering column behind the dash. I noticed it when I was changing the radio.

    Just my .02

this may seem stupid, but the tail lights on that modle year have different fillaments for each. My brake light worked, and my blinker did not. I replaced the bulb, and amazing- it worked!! I dont mean to be rude or anything, but i hope you checked it.

Yes, the fronts are dual filament. They are parking lights as well as turn indicators.

So, does this mean that if the flash filament has gone (Grille) that this would stop the sidemarker light, and the turn ind on the dash from working? but let the rear work ok?

Did you check the ground? Also take a test light and check at the socket. If no power is there then go to the wiring harnes right under your driver's side door and check again by probing a wire. It is pretty common for the wires to break where they go over the fuel tank. I have seen quite a few with that problem and even more with the ground problem since here in MN they like to rust out.

The old bulbs were low on blinker fluid.
Look in the plug...probably have some corrosion in the socket. The new bulb is corrosion free so it made enough of a contact to work You can proably sand or file the contacts and cure the problem. Get yourself some Diielectic grease and put it on the contacts and the socket rim to keep air an moisture out.
