My '77 needs a new gate(damn Canadian winters) but as I am looking for one, I am concerned with the support it bolts to. Quick inspection shows it is pretty rusted and I might as well fix it now. Is that part the same as a "complete tail pan" as shown under the blazer section of 73-87chevytrucks.com ? If not, what do I need to fix it?

JC Whitney sells the rear tail pan in their chevy truck repair panel section. I used this one and it worked great. Mine was rusted into three seperate pieces before I replaced it. it was probably easier for me however since I had the rear quarters off at the same time. If the tail pan is rusted It's a good idea to replace it to give the new gate some better support.
