TH-700R\'s 1-2 shift kicks me in the A$$

Okay, on the TH-700R4, what would cause a harsh 1-2 upshift? The shift is harsh no matter if I go balls out on the go pedal or if I drive like my Grandma [IMG]. I know the fluid is shot and the tranny is going to be power flushed before next week. Any ideas? Thanks for the help...
    Peace,
    Chris

I would just change the fluid like you plan, and keep on driving it. It could last a long time like it is. If you are brave, attempt the rebuild like you said.

Only problem with that, is that shifts like that are real hard on driveshaft u-joints.
A friend proved this in his Trans Am with his shift kit he installed himself. Man, it shifted real hard. He liked it. He blew joints.

Re: TH-700R\'s 1-2 shift kicks me in the A$$

I'd chage the fluid first. Then if its still doing it, then I'd say get the video your refering to and there is the GM Automatic transmission manual that is real good too. You can get it at any Autozone or Advance parts store. I think Haynes produces it. As far as I can tell, the 700r4 is one of the most difficult trannys to rebuild and it aint that bad.
As long as you keep everything in line and do exactly what the book says, and MAKE SURE EVERY LITTLE PARTS IS ABSO-FING_LUTELY SPOTLESS BEFORE you put it back together. Buy LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of cheap brake cleaner. Also, do yourself one more favor...... after you clean the housing check the SOB for cracks. I have been down this road before. Trust me!!!
If you want to just replace the seal, rings, gaskets and clutches you can get by without spending more that about 300 dollars. Good luck!!!!

One more thing!!! Have you been playing around with the carb or TBI at all?
YOu may also have the TV cable out of adjustment as well.
This can cause REAL soft shifts as well as REAL harsh shifts too. For more info on adjusting visit www.nashvillek5.freeservers.com

Re: TH-700R\'s 1-2 shift kicks me in the A$$

If you are planning the rebuild now, make sure to budget as much "extra" as you can, in case you get in there and find worn out parts that cost you $$ to replace, 'cause as soon as you tear into something expecting it to cost X dollars and take X time to accomplish, there is no possible way you budgeted your time and money according to what its ACTUALLY going to take. : )

BTW, I'd verify the TV cable is setup correct, and, not attempting to start a big argument, there is a LOT to be said about changing very old tranny fluid, and shortly thereafter the tranny failing completely.

Yeah D, thats about like the argument of weather a d44 is better than a 10 bolt. 6 one way and 1/2 a dozen the other.
I've never experienced it but have heard many say the same thing. Something about the way the sludge and crude have formed to your seals and o0rings and such, then changing the fluid puts new detergents in there that start breaking down all that sludge and taking the seals and o-rings with it.

Re: TH-700R\'s 1-2 shift kicks me in the A$$

Before you go to the expense of a rebuild. change the fluid as you want to do. And get the TV cable properly adjusted. If it is out of adjustment the shifts can be very harsh. I rember you said you just bought your Blazer. Maby the previous owner had it adjusted wrong. Or knocked it out of adjustment. Maby that will fix the problem.
When you get the fluid changed make sure they drop the pan and clean it out good. Check the pan for small pieces of metal in the gunk on the bottom. If you find a lot of metal or chunks of stuff a rebuild is in order.
Also if you dont have an aftermarket Trans oil cooler. Get one! 700r4s need all the extra cooling they can get for long life.

I got a 700r sitting in my garage, I was planning on rebuilding it......someday. A tranny cooler is HIGHLY recommended!! I should have put on on mine years ago, now i know the hard way.

Not all transmission flushers use a solvent. The one we use at my work simply flushes new fluid through it.
