Is the adapter between the NP205 and the TH400 and the 4L80E the same? Anybody got the parts manual? Anybody got a 91 V3500 or K3500 with a 4L80E / NP205 combo and can get a number? Pics?
    Thanks

I went out and got the part number off my '86, 400/205 adaptor and it came out 15597799.

Don't know if this number is the same or different for the 4L80E however.

I bought a GM 85-91 truck parts manual off of Ebay but it hasn't arrived yet - that should shed some light too.
    Thanks

Do you have the 4L80E there to where you can visually look at the output shaft on it and measure it, too?

If you can get the length of the shaft, I can tell you which adaptor will fit and not fit.

Yes I do - I just have to un-shrink wrap it. I'll do that tomorrow. Hopefully before it hits 115 Deg.

Also, which 205 do you have...the pre-'85 or the post-'84?

The 86K30 has the factory setup on it, TH400/NP205.
The 79K5 has a custom adapter between the 4L80E and the NP205 it is a little over an inch thick. I believe it is probably the later version. Aren't those the "round" pattern?

Your '86 has the round pattern 6 bolt adaptor. This is also the "short" height adaptor, too.

The '84 and older adaptors are a figure 8 pattern and are the "tall" height adaptors.

The other one, one inch thick, sounds like the 400/203 adaptor because no 205 has an adaptor this thin.

Here is a link to a post I made a while back about the 4L80E I've installed behind my 502. Don't know if this is the info you're looking for, but hopefully it will help.

I also have part numbers if you need them. Just let me know.

Robb, what year was the 400/205 out of the K30? Is the adaptor the "tall" or "short" one? In other words, the "tall" one being the figure 8 adaptor and the "short" one being the round 6 bolt pattern adaptor.

Very informative post thanks, that's worth making a favorite. But I'm searching for the elusive "factory" adaptor that was on the 4L80E / NP205 combo. I am trying to find out if it's the same as the 400/205 late model or a different part.

I measured my 4L80E this morning and the stickout is 2.3/4" for the actual splines (32 spline), maybe 2.7/8" to end of shaft. The NP241 adapter that came with it is 2.1/2" thick. And of course the bolt patern on the 4L80E is the round 6 bolt.

Oh, and the number on the NP241/4L80E adaptor is 15654827. (2.5" thick)

    Hey Wes,

Not sure exactly what year the K30 was, but as I recall (it's been a while) it was a '76 or so. The adapter is the "tall" figure 8 style.

So to use the "tall" adaptor, the shaft stick-out on the 4L80E would be around 4 1/2". Is this what you have?

Recieved my HUGH illustrated parts manual 1985-86 CK and 1987-91 RV from ebay yesterday. Here is the transfer case part number skinny:
    Adapter,transfer case (K/V1,2 W/M40)(85-90) - 15597795
    (NP208)
    Adapter,transfer case (K/V1,2 W/MD8) - 15597796
    (NP208,NP241)
    Adapter,transfer case (V1 W/MT1)(91) - 15654927
    (NP241)
    Adapter,transfer case (K3/V3,W/M40)(85-90) - 15597799
    (NP205)
    Adapter,transfer case (V3 W/MT1)(91) - 15629600
    (NP205)
    RPO DEFINITIONS
    MD8 - TRANSMISSION/4 SPEED AUTO (700R4)
    MT1 - TRANSMISSION/4 SPEED AUTO THM R2(4L80E)
    M20 - TRANSMISSION/4 SPEED, 117M,6.55 1ST (SM465)
    M40 - TRANSMISSION/3 SPEED AUTO (TH400)

I put the transfer case in parenthises based on transfercase listings per transmission type and RPO code located elsewhere in the manual. Maybe I'll get a chance to scan the applicable pages in over the weekend (I'll put a link up to webshot location if I do).

Two different part numbers right there. And the split is '90 and '91.

Now we need to find out how long the output shaft is on the 4L80E compared to the 400 output shaft. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif
