TH400 question about spline count

Discussion in '1973-1991 K5 Blazer | Truck | Suburban' started by **DONOTDELETE**, Nov 9, 2001.

I was looking at an 88 K5 blazer today that looks like someone transplanted a TH400 into it. It has a NP208 transfer on the TH400, my question is what would the spline count be on the TH400? Would this TH400 work in a doubler set-up with no mods? Is the output shaft longer/shorter 32 spline?

the spline count on a TH400 is certainly 32 nuless its output shaft has been changed. As for the length of the output shaft on a 400 built for a NP208 - I can't say. Maybe just give Stephen at ORD a call?

Yeah, sounds like someone else transplanted the 400/208 combo into the Blazer. No big deal on that part.

BTW, all 400's are the 32 spline count shafts. [IMG]

You can get a diffrent spline count. I once had a 27 spline shaft put into my BOP400 to not have to swap out the Tcase gear. (Long story) It held up just fine behind my 455 Buick for over 100,000 hard miles.

I am pretty sure the shaft needs to be changed to use a 203. I think they are shorter then a 208 shaft but Steve at ORD will know for sure.

The 203 shaft is the shortest one you can get for it. (stock) A 208 is slightly longer, A 205 is a 4.5" shaft.

It should be 32 spline, but someone could have converted to 27 spline to use a T/C with a 27 spline input. Many possibilties.

All the TH400s are 32spline unless converted, there are three different stick out lenghts:
    NP203 1 1/2"
    NP208 2 1/2"
    NP205 4 1/2"

For the Doubler you will need the 1 1/2" stick out but the NP208 400 is only an inch longer and MAYBE you can shorten it alittle and make it work, I have not checked it but only heard that it might work so keep that in mind!
