    thatK30guy: D60\'s

What year did they start putting D60's in 1 ton GM's.

I saw the following post and thought they started before this, but wasn't sure:
    "Mike-The D60's didn't come out untill 77. There is a D44 in the front of my 76 1ton."

I could be wrong but didn't the D60 come out before 77?

If you didn't built it yourself, how can you call it yours.......?

    That really blows......
but thanks man, that saved me from making 2hr (4hr round trip) to look at a 75 1 ton. The guy said he'd sell it for $200 if I trailered it home. He said he didn't know what kind of front end it was, just that it had 8 lugs. I assumed it was a D60 so I was going to buy the whole truck just for the axle. $200 would have been cheap for a D60. Oh well!
Well thanks for saving me the trip.

Another thing of note is that the early D60's didn't come with 35-spline inner shafts, just 30 splines like the D44. Sure, bigger R&P and U-joint, but same size axle shaft as a D44. Forget which year they went to the 35-spline inner shafts, but it was in the early 80's.

    Ryeguy,

You sure about this? (30spline inner shafts for early model D60s). I thought that at one point, but then found out that the earlier models (77 to 79' or so) came with 35spline inners, but the shaft itself got smaller at the neck. All came with 30 spline stubs for sure. But basically, All GM D60s did have 35spline inner shafts.

    Re: 30 vs 35 spline.

I haven't actually ripped apart a 70's GM D60 to verify this. But I was told this under no uncertain terms from two completely separate sources that there are two "generations" of these axles. One has a pair of K30's in their driveway (his and hers). The other runs a semi-wrecker Chevy business on the side and sees parts come and go all the time. Basically, what I was told is that pre '81 or so had 30-spline inner shafts. (I know all had 30-spline outers). So I trust that it's likely the case, but no guarantees. If I were buying a D60, I'd spend the half-hour pulling off the hub, yanking the shaft, and counting the splines.

AFAIK, all Ford front D60's are 35 spline, but they made lots of rear diff's with 30 splines. Not sure about Dodge. D61 rear axles are 30 splines.

    Re: thatK30guy: D60\'s

My '79 Dana 60 has 35 spline inners. ALL 60s from GM were 35 spline, just that the early ones necked down a bit, much like Dodge 60s.

    Ken,

Exactly what I was trying to say, but mine is a bit more long winded [IMG].

Anyhow, Ryeguy, the only other confusion I can think of is the rear D60 axles. They came with all kinds of mixed up splines [IMG]

My D60 was from a '78 and it had 35 spline inners and 30 or 31 outers............lost count on the outers!

Sorry for the wait. Been working all day! [IMG]

The D60 fronts did come start in 1977. Anybody who says they have a stock one ton from 76 and older is full of $hit or dont know anything about these trucks. But, they could also have the D60 if they swapped it in. So, may check to see.

All D60's in stock form come with 35 spline inners.
All outer stub shafts in stock form are 30 splines.

Buy it for $200 and use it for parts you do want, and then part it out and sell it. You'll make back the $200 and then some on it and you can use that extra cash for more toys for you..... [IMG]

You're absolutely right, Wes. There was no such thing as a K30 until '77.
