say what ? there aint no way!

how can that be possible ?

    someone explain please

cuz i cant evne begin to imagine how any such thing is possible, how are we leaving and returnign to earth on shuttles, how can any gravity in the universe keep mass on earth,

    thats just insane...

    i dont believe it

    there is no %$#@! way!

    thanks

The earth ORBITS at 66K mph that means as it is in its orbit around the sun it is traveling at 66,000 mph. It rotates a hell of a lot slower. At the equator the earth is what about 33,000 miles in circumference divide by 24 and you get about 1375 mph which is pretty damn slow on a cosmic scale.

Our 'orbit' is through a vacuum Randy.

It's all relative...think of the shuttle astronauts working on the outside of the shuttle in space. The shuttle is moving at 18,000 mph to maintain that orbit, but so is the astronaut so stepping outside ain't no big deal. There is no air resistance...it's not like trying to step out of an airplane at 500 mph.

So, the earth is doing 66,000 mph, and therefore even before lifting off so is the shuttle.

i just find it to be insane,

so if youre out in space next to an object travling 18k mph thenyoure automatically gonna be traveling the same ?

    i am missing something here..

    big time..

and how in the hell do craft come back into the atmosphere and land on the planet thats traveling 66k mph ??

sanda you lost me, dividing by 24 but why ?

lol @ hi pinion and zen hehe

24 is the hours in one rotation of the Earth on it's axis.
You have to remember gravity. Although we don't fully understand it, gravity is what keeps it all in place and working. Speaking of gravity, pay attention to tides and people this month. Mars is going to be the second largest body in the sky during August, second only to the moon. This hasn't happened in at least 5000 years. It may not happen again for 60000 years. Its location should have an interesting effect on many things including: tides, people, migratory birds, weather, and anything else reactive to magnetic forces.

Anything orbiting us is also traveling at the same speed.
If you ride a bus going 100 mph you can walk from front to back and front again without realizing the speed you are actually moving because it is relevent to the speed of the bus.

Kinda like flying in a jet at 600 MPH,,,if you jumped up inside the plane you wouldn't slam into the back of the plane,, :eek1: :eek1: :eek1:

    or would you ????? :doah:

Ever dropped something on the seat beside you while driving your truck?

It doesn't fly back and get plastered to the seat, nor do you. Gotta remember Newton's law, that an object in motion wants to remain in motion, and an object at rest wants to remain at rest. So, thats why when you floor your truck, you get shoved back into your seat, that that sharp pencil on the dash comes flying at your face, you were originaly not moving, and as such, there will be resistance to your body suddenly being accelerated by the truck. Same thing when ya slam on the brakes, your body is already moving, and doesn't want to stop.

So you ask, how come you go flying around on the school bus when you are walking down the isle, and your bus driver slams on the brakes on ya? (quite fun I must add, lol) Thats becuase you are travelling at 60 mph on the bus, but it feels motionless becuase everything around you is moving that fast as well. But, when the bus driver slams on the brakes, you wanna keep moving at 60 mph, while the bus is rapidly coming to a stop. When this happens, unless something slows you down (air resistance, legs in the isle, face in the seat, or body against the windsheild) your body will keep flying ahead :)

Next time you are on a bus with a driver you know, and you are the last one off (like I was) get the driver to get the bus going about 70 mph, then slam on the brakes right after you swing yourself up and towards the front off the seat, you'll find yourself standing beside the bus driver when ya hit the floor, lol :D

Astronaughts are experiencing the same basic thing up there. The planet may be moving at 66k mph, but the astronaughts are as well, but since it is a vaccum, there is very little there to slow them down. So, as far as they can tell, they are not moving relative to Earth. However, when they enter the earth's atmosphere, it isn't like they are hitting it at 66k mph, they'll hit it at whatever speed they would if the earth was not moving. Say thats 1000 mph when they hit the atmosphere, technically they are going 67 000 mph when they hit the earth, but relative to the earth, not the solar system / universe, they are only moving about 1000, make sense?

And yeah, if you wanna get reaaaally confusing, think about this: Not only is earth flying around the sun at 66k mph, but the sun is flying around something or other at the center of the galaxy a billions the times of the speed that earth is going around the sun, and the galaxy is actually accelerating away from the center of the universe at an extreme speed as well. We are not moving at just 66k mph, its yotta of yottas mph :) (Look it up, a yotta is actually a metric unit of measurement :) )

Physical science is truely an incredible thing, mind boggling for sure, but incredible.

Like I mentioned, in my grade 12 physics year, was able to disprove the big bang theory, lol (using spectrascopes, you can tell that everything is red shifted, meaning that it is moving away from you, so if you do a spectra analysis of other galaxies, they are moving away from you, not closer like was predicted with the big bang theory. If we were truely all gonna get squished together again due to gravimetric forces, it'd be green shifted, meaning we were starting to move closer together for our eventual doom :eek1:

    Again, fun stuff :D

How does the red shift disprove the big bang theory? all it shows is that the universe is still expanding. Maby the universe just hasnt reached its apex of expansion and started coming back together yet. Kind of like those paddle balls we played with as a kid and secretly play with as adults.

As they have said, it is all based on frame of reference. this is all part of einstein's theory of relativity.

The shuttle is not really trying to land on something traveling at 66k mph. It is locked in orbit with Earth and therefore already carries this initial velocity. Its speed relative to Earth is 18k mph, which gets scrubbed off during re-entry. It just gets a little trickier when trying to send and retrive a craft from someplace outside our Earth-moon system.

I saw a show lastnight on discovery where they were looking for stars that had "planet wobble" the found one that had a gas giant the size of jupiter that traveled around its sun in 4 earth days, they said the atmosphere was so hot that metal would instantly turn to a gas. it was a pretty cool show

if u like to read, a really good book is "what einstien told his barber" by robert l wolke. breaks stuff down into avereage people terms so one can understand stuff. that question is in it too

btw its 1040mph(1670kmh) and 10,600mph (17100kmh) around the sun-of course that is relative to the center of the sun
