Man, I almost crapped myself this morning.. about half an hour ago, when I was driving to computer school on the highway, my soft top almost completely flew off. I was going around 60-65, in the far left lane of a 3 lane highway.. all of a sudden, the top rips back and I see everyone inback of me slow down. I was lucky there wasn't a cop or something.. he'd probably pull me over for wreckless driving or something dumb. Luckally the top still stuck to most of the bed rails, otherwise it woulda been on someone's car. I think next soft top is gonna be snaps instead of velcro! Just though I'd share.

If the Skyler is installed correctly, there is no way for it to blow off. There's straps and a large bar that secures the bottom of the rear window so it keeps that square truck look. The bar presses against the side of the cab which is impossible to move once when it's tightened. I use to own a Skyler and had no problems at high speeds (90mph). I would of never got rid of it but the kids need a rear seat and a roll cage is going in soon.

Yeah, it's a Skyler. It almost happened again THIS morning. It ripped up a little by the passanger's side corner. I dunno if the velcro is going bad or what. I do have the bar extremely tight now, which may have been the problem before. I think the extreme cold, then me blasting the heater every morning coulda loosened it. As for these straps you're talking about, I don't have any. I have the top, the bar,the bed rails and the rail that bends around the back of the roof. Am I missing something? I got the soft top with the truck when I bought it. I think I'm gonna get a soft top that looks like the topper with snaps. Who makes a good one for around $500?

You should have two straps that go around the bar and secure to the lower side panels behind your front seats. Just another safety measure added. If you call Skyler up, they'll probably send a set for free (www.skylercorp.com). They sent me the special heat resistant velcro for the rear tailgate for free since other stick on velcro would just get hot and come off. You have to have the top tight. Your only option on a full top is Bestop now. Sounds like Kayline is going out of business. [IMG]

CRAP dude, when you described your experience it gave me the same feeling back in 1979 when I was 15 years old and was doing my first test drive on a 1964 Lemand Convertable. I just got going out of the field, doing about 45 mph and WHAM the hood flew up making a VERY loud sound at my head area and blinded my sight......whew, at 15 years old, even now it was a good one....I did pull over safely, and now I drive a K5 with a hood safety latch....

Built for a purpose.

How come I'm never around when this stuff happens? Mabye if we adjust that top loop thingy the top will hold better. I think the edge should go completly over the velco and I'm pretty sure yours doesnt. That could cause it to loosen easier (less velcro holding it). Does this only happen on rt 17? I think the massive holes in your floor corners behind the front seats combined with going 75 to keep up with traffic could be forcing a lot of air inside the truck and against the inside of the top. Oh yeah dont try say I caused this since I opened that corner to get the tow strap out last week!!! [IMG]

I've got the best top on my '73 and it'll stay on at 100mph, although i did go without it once and nearly lost the back carpet at that speed. Price is right in the $400-500 range too.
All snaps.

i've got the besttop tigertop its from the jc whitney catalog although you can probably get it off their website. If you've got the catalog it should be in the jeeps section under softops they've got a listing there for the ones they make for toyotas, ramchargers, and k5's.
