Re: The officer said \"you need to buy more GVW\"

he yelled over his loudspeaker at me (didnt want to pull me over I guess...) and told me my bumper is too high, it's a six inch lift and it's lowered about an inch from the six inch.. on a 74 K5.
He told me I needed to lower my bumper, or buy more Governed Weight... you know like how certain vehicles are rated at 10,001 plus lbs so their bumper can be at 27 inches? or sumthing...
    Anyways...
Does anyone know about buying more GVW at the DOL..
    I may go ask tomorrow...

It would make our lives a lot easier if we could buy more GRVW. Just think, pay a little more for plates and not have to fool w/ B.S. like lift laws & smog checks. "Yeah I got an'85 Cammaro w/ a 17,000 GRVW." That would rock!

According to my title my s-10 had a GVW of 8,001 pounds and I got truck plates for it, but they wouldn't let me put them on my blazer! bunch of dumbasses. I wonder if the people at the DMV even know what cars are!

I was able to put truck plates on my Blazer but up to a limit of 16,000 combined pounds. My dually however, they did ask me how much I wanted to buy.

    Interesting.....

Are they other "goodies" that you get at those specific break points? Like are the smog laws more lenient, or different tire size / mud flap rules?......

Sounds like a possible "workaround" solution for some people who want to go BIG, and are willing to pay a little extra to the DMV. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think in Washington State, you can put truck plates on any car or truck. My boss has truck plates on his Acura MDX so he can park in the truck loading zones. One of his friends has truck plates on his NSX. Are truck plates considered "buying more GVW."

NY if there is 4 or seats it is a car plate. Had an old dodge van years ago and put 2 seats in it so I won't be bothered by the cops

Here it is a double edged sword. You can claim more GVW and exempt yourself from emissions testing...but then you are subject to regular inspections (which are very stringent).

Usually I try not to make any fuss with the cops...especially on bumper height. My K5 like most K5's is technically described as a 2dr Station wagon. Ever seen the bumper height laws for cars?

here in indiana, if it is registered as a 2dr wagon, we have headlight laws. but what does it matter. there is a local cop that has a suburban with a 8" and 39" groundhawgs. seein as how half of our police force is rednecks, it really doesnt matter.

Re: The officer said \"you need to buy more GVW\"

Here in Finland if your trucks GVW is less than 3500 kg (about 7200 lbs?) it really sucks now. The tire size is the original +2" and thats it. If it had 31" from the factory you can ut 33" on and so on. On a /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif 33 is no problem but 35 is allmost impossible. And you can not buy more either. Body lift is 3" max. And suspension is +3" max. This means allso the max overoll lift including the lift from the tires is 6" over stock.

But if you have a /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif or /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif with GVW over 3500 kg it is considered "heavy truck" and it is completely different. I asked at the locals how big a tire can I put on my "heavy truck" and they did not know, said I must ask the "Head Office". I asked the same Question and they replyed like this: "The tire must have roome to turn and spin". Nothing else. Offcourse the tires must have the ability to carry the GVW the truck has but anyway. Same goes for the lift. Nobody is interested because it is a "heavy truck".
That is why I bought this K20 /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif. It is the HD model with 8 lugs so the GVW is 3660 kg or something like that.

Sometimes I just love these finnish laws /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
