did anyone ever pull them themselves? i got stitches in my middle finger last friday, and was told to wait 7-10 days, and come back to have them removed. i really dont see a point in going back, and spending another $75 and wasting my time. i can do the same thing in about 5 minutes with a pair of fingernail clippers and a pair of tweezers. any negatives to this?

BTW, there's only 2 of them, but they're right in the tip of my middle finger.

I've pulled out about 25 like that with no problem. Just make sure that they have been in as long as the Dr. recommended and yank them.

I did two of five on my knuckle, but this was when I was 15, so my mom made me go back to the doctor.

I think it's mainly checkin for infection, not actually having a doctor remove them that's important.

I never go back, who the hell wants to wait around the doctor's office and catch someone's cold just for some minor sewing job?

    all the time....

its a balancing act on when to pull em.. saturate the area with alcohol prior to it, it really exposes them and makes em come out easier..

definitely don't pull em early, but be careful about leaving em in too long too, they can be a real pain to get out... ya end up having to hack em out.. 7 to 10 days is the definite window..

normally i do em myself, but my last batch of 65 on that leg wound, i let the doc do em and take a peek. there where so many internals and some fancy stitching up top i figured it'd be best to let him.. left them in a bit too long and he had to dig a couple of em out... made him more nervous than me... :haha:

my little sister is a CNA, and one of my best friends is an RN. they should be able to spot infection pretty easier, wouldnt you think?

I've pulled a lot of my stitches with no problem. Like Ryoken said, timing is key. I've only had one bad experience doing this. I had a gash on my forehead that required about 12 sticthes, 4 of them under the skin in the meat. The doc was supposed to use the stuff that dissolves after a couple of weeks but he didn't. Well, about three weeks after getting the stiches, the swelling and pain was still there. I also noticed what looked like a huge blackead forming. I try digging the blackead out and sure nuff, it starts popping out a little. I grab some tweazers and start to try and pull it out... something just didn't feel right though. I ended up pulling about 1/8" of my "solluble" stitch out. Called my doc and he told me to come back in so he could cut me open again to remove my stiches. Yeah, I cut off the stitch that was sticking out and haven't thought about it in over 10 years. Go for it!
