Researchers from the University of Ash have found that the "thumping" is axlewrap binding the universal or the tranny/t-case mount is shot and needs replacing. Just a few things to check out.

Check your t-case mounts. If I have my truck in first gear and punch it real hard the engine torques up and slams the t-case against the floor. I replaced one mount (couldnt afford the other) and it cured part of the problem.

Had this same exact problem. The t-case is hitting the floor. This is caused by eiher a bad t-case/tranny mount or more likely bad motor mounts (especially the drviers side). The engine lifts under torque and takes the t-case with it until it hits the floor. A cheap fix is to chain the drivers side cylinder head to the frame to keep it from moving or you can just replace the mounts.

Mine did this whe ni first bought it...i guess when the tranny got rebuilt the shop forgot to put the bolts back on for the mount, so the transfer case just sat on the mount and did that under acceleration...

Same thing happened to me a long time ago, it was the drivers side motor mount.
