    What is good advance for '01 zz4 crate motor w/ HEI? I was thinking 8 to 12 BTDC? Anyone know?

    You can start anywhere in that range, more likely try 6* to start to get that beautiful new motor started and broken in. Then you can play with the base timing, vac advance (maybe put in an adjustable one), recurve the mechanical advance, etc. Lot depends on what gas you are running (octane rating), aluminum heads (not sure if ZZ4 has them or Vortecs), etc. Start mild for the breakin and then start playing.
