I've got a 350 with a Holley 600cfm 4bbl carb. I checked the timing today and it seemed pretty far advanced. The timing markings are 3 points and it was set far ahead of the 3rd point when I checked it.

I set it to right at the 3rd point and tested. Well, it was backfiring through the carb, so I had to advance it again.

Is this normal? Should I have to run the timing advanced like this for it not to backfire through the carb? The reason I checked it in the first place was because it wanted to stall when I put it into gear; I had to feather the gas a few times before I could go. Also, it would break up at high RPMs, like right before it would shift.

Any advice for me oh wise ones? [IMG]

    Thanks,

    Thomas.

How did this come about, have you made any changes to the engine recently? Did this happen gradually or all of a sudden?

Mine is completely screwy on timing - if you set it according to specs it will backfire and ping and just run like crap. Alot has to do with 2001 gas vs. much earlier specs. All of our eco-friendly additives cause a much different burn pattern than the straight gasoline of a few years ago. Just leave it advanced, and join the club[IMG]

This may not be the correct way to set timing...but I always keep advancing my timing until it just starts to ping under load, then i back it off a hair and call it good. I can't remember the last time i used a timing light.[IMG]
