A while back there was dicussion about exactly how much the fiberglass topper weighs on our K5's. Well, hopefully someone didn't find out while I was away in the desert for four months... don't wanna be posting repeat info. I took mine off and weighed my Jimmy at the Air Force bases's scale that's used to weigh self-moves. Here's the results:

'83 Jimmy w/ topper, full tank of gas and 33's = 5080 lbs.
same with topper removed = 4920 lbs.

Fiberglass topper with solid side windows = 160 lbs.

Sure feels heavier than that when removing it by myself!! - Hope this info helps anyone out. - Gary

That sounds right, while you were gone someone weighed one with the slider and it was 180 pounds.

Well welcome back, hope the move goes good. Yup most people hear were saying 250 and up.
But I think they were guessing and giving opinions, that's my opinion !

I heard the later ones...like 89-91 or so are heavier...with more reinforcement or something. I know mine felt more than 160.

I would think that the later model tops would at least way a little bit more, mainly because they have rear seat shoulder belts that attach to the top. The inside of the tops are molded differently in this area and I assume have reinforcements.
Next time I take the top off, I'll weigh it at work.

I weighed and posted the slider window top info...81 Jimmy with no seat belt reinforcement stuff molded into the topper and I got 188 lbs.

So what is the full weight of a Can-Back?

Of course, with that, you could also take out the rear window and save more weight.

If a K-5 is "Built not Bought", why does this stuff cost me so much money? [IMG]

My calibrated back says the 73-75 is 230 or so. And yes I mean back. I take that thing off by myself every year. I have a retaining wall that is bed level and I get under that pig and walk it off to waiting cinder blocks. Then I bitch about my back for a week to my wife who says to get somebody to help next time. LOL
