In Canada we do not have the 'right' to bear arms. That is one huge difference between Canada and the US. However, we have been able to collect, own and shoot handguns with the correct paperwork. It does take a while to jump through all the hoops though.

About 10 years ago the Canadian government introduced a national firearms registry with the lofty goal of eliminating gun violence in Canada. Billions of dollars later and gun related crimes are at about the same level they've always been at. Duh, how many criminals do you think are A) going to register their guns? and B) how many criminals commit these crimes with hunting rifles?

Now they want to totally ban handguns, confiscate existing handguns from legal gun owners and collectors...and to what end? The gun crime will continue as it always has because criminals don't play by the rules anyways.

FWIW I do not own a handgun. I do own a couple of rifles and a shotgun though. My Stepdad owns two revolvers that he shoots at the gun club. A .22 and a .357 magnum. I've shot them both and he still shoots regularly (he is 77 and a pretty good shot IMO)

This appears to be pure electioneering, and I'm hoping it completely backfires on them. Not that I voted for the bastards (Liberal party) last time around, but I sure as hell won't be voting for them this time either (election is Jan 23)

That blows, and it blows hard. Hope they realize it won't do any good.

I hope Canada doesn't become one of the prime examples in the argument for personal responsibility for your owns afety

Good luck, maybe you have to get worse before you can get better, the cost though, may be horrendous

I'm glad we've got gun lobbyists here in the States who've got the evidence to shut up the anti-gun leftists/extremists who still can't seem to (or flat out refuse to accept) that criminals don't play by the rules and that limiting gun ownership only makes it so private citizens can't defend themselves against crooks.

Totally agree with you. Hope this completely blows up in the Liberal Party's faces and they're forced to eat crow while mumbling expletives.

I certainly hope that it does not go through. We all know the statistical arguments rgarding handguns and crime. It is just one more example of blaming the tool, not the mechainc.

I wish you the best of luck and hope the law doesn't pass.

God bless our forefathers forgiving us that right. Despite decades of trampling, mis-interpretation and removal, it, for the most part, still stands strong 230 years later

I personally don't own a handgun and never will because I know that for me I would probably make a mistake with it. I can tend to be a hothead sometimes. But for those who do want to own one responsibly, I think they should be able to if they want.

Just being picky Mike, but they affirmed it. If it is a Right it cannot be given by man, I know what you ment though.

Those madcap Nazis sure do love their gun laws.

    That's really a shame.

yep, sure has worked in Australia and England (where violent crime rates are up since their bans). One would think that the good guys in Canada could use those other two English-speaking nations as examples of what NOT to do...

    Thanks for pointing that out.

Let me rephrase.... "God bless our forefathers for protecting our right in the Bill of Rights"

That always seems to be the problem. I try very hard to stay out of the democrat/republican turmoil, but whenever the hippies are talking it just doesn't seem to be thought out well. What they say would be great in a perfect place but as soon as you factor in humans it all goes to hell. Just like communism.

"Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my gun!"

On a side note, my aunt's boyfriend bought his AK-47 (folding stock, bayonet, clips and ammo for $600) from a murderer. He didn't use the gun to kill the person, but had to sell his guns when he was released. The AK has 3 notches cut into it...

yeah i blows i was thinking of getting a handgun in a few years. i think the ban is stupid too, i think they should only sell handgun ammo in gun clubs, as that is the only real place you are supost to shoot them, as you cant carry in canada.
