I highly doubt it's a mountain lion. They rarely, if ever, get close to people. If it does turn out to be a lion, you need to shoot the bastard, they're very dangerous. Especially if you run across it at night...it wouldn't be pretty.

Opps, I forgot you live in SD. You should check your local laws on harvesting a lion. You might not be able to shoot them up there, I don't know. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I know here, the TX Parks & Wildlife Dept wants you to kill any bobcat/lion onsite and call the warden to come pick it up(yeah right, if I'm lucky enough to bag a lion, I'm stuffing that sumbitch! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) Anyway, good luck...

I was able to study it a little closer. Looks like there are toenail marks so it is not a Cat. I am leaning towards a dog, it has sunken in pretty well so i would assume it is a larger dog, although it looks like you have had some snowmelt and without something to guage the size of the track and without knowing how soft the ground it's kinda hard to tell how large of a dog your dealing with.

this is an easy one, those are easter bunny tracks. I guess you can shoot if you see it again, but the kids will be sad.

Okay, I've found where this beast is hiding, lets get some guys from the hunting forum to help take it down

I have been on a lion hunt or two
I dont think that game warden knows $H**.
    Those are dog tracks.
There are toe nails. Cougars normally walk with their claws retracted like a house cat.
Tracks look to narrow. cougar tracks are big and wide about 4" across.
The Pad in the middle is too pointy. The pad in dogs comes to a point. The cougars pad comes to a double point and is more rounded. Also the toes are too pointy. Cat toes are rounder.
Cats also walk with their toes more splayed apart.
Dogs rear paws step in each others tracks when walking.\
Cougars walk with their legs wider apart.

Prolly was just some big black Lab cruising by looking for a snack
