I found a gearbox in my shed that I was wondering if anyone has a clue what it might be.
It has stamped on both sides, C-96391
It has the New Process symbol with AK NP 5.
The PTO cover is on the right side with the fill and drain plug.
The rear cover has 4 bolts holding it on and the counter shaft has a seperate cover.
There is no provision for a speedo gear on the tail housing,
So I believe that it either came from a Dodge or Ford 4x4 with a divorced t-case.
There is a date stamp on the shift cover that has 76 on it.
And it is a 4 speed. It sorta looks like an SM465.
But in my manual it shows that a 465 has a rear cover that covers the output shaft and countershaft.
And the PTO cover and fill and drain plugs are on the left side.
    TIA.

Perhaps an Sm420? IIRC, look pretty similar to an Sm465. Can't recall any other tranny that resembles those two.

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?

My buddies brother has a divorced 465 in his 76 F250 4x4. Could be that.

well as it says NP on it that pretty much rules out the MUNCIES sm465 and sm420 and has us looking towards New Process trannies. the 435 is the most talked about then the t18-19

    Thanx guys
According to drivetrain.com it is an NP435.

IDENTIFICATION - Top loaded, tower shift "Granny-Low" truck transmission with cast iron case and rectangular aluminum top cover. Main bearings may be either ball or tapered design. It is non-synchronized in 1st gear and synchronized 2nd through 4th. The synchros are aluminum ring/pin assemblies and the 3rd/4th synchro has outer "pie plates". There are no brass synchro rings. The casting number will be C-9XXXX.

Cool, I think I will hang onto this. The innards look to be in good shape.
Maybe I can stumble upon a divorced 205. [IMG]
