Gotta take it all the way down, I'm sure you knew that. If you haven't been in one I'd get a body who has. Or take it to some one. Sorry I can't help you much with this one.

You have to remove way more than the pump. You have to remove all the guts from the trans, remove the old output shaft and then install the new output shaft. Next you get to put all that stuff back inside the tranny. [IMG] A buddy of mine just did this to a 700R4 that he's installing in a Jeep. He had to change the output shaft to one that would mate up with his Dana 300 transfer case. He swears it wasn't that hard to do....

You are probably going to need a special tool to pull the pump. It is a steel sleeve that goes around the input shaft and clamps on the pump. It has a threaded rod on the end that is screwed down onto the input shaft which in turn pulls the pump. After that you will have to remove a few drums and bands. Keep an eye out for falling one way roller pieces. The hardest part about tranny work is how to hold onto the tranny when you are working on it. It is best to have the bellhousing pointing towards the sky. I have tried other ways and it won't go together. You are also going to need some small pry bars to remove the large snap rings that hold down the clutch packs. Just lay everything out in the order that you take it out and it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck.

If thats all your going to have to do to it hten no its not that bad. Its not that bad if you have to rebuild it. Its just that you have to KNOW what you are doing.
But to swap out the shaft all you have to do is take everything out and keep it in chronilogical order. Put it all back in the same what it came out. I would however, recommend, since you have it apart, to get a new ring and seal overhaul kit. They are like less than 100 bones. And clean it up real good . The worst part will be compressing those springs around the sprag assembly, I think its called. It been a while, sorry for the lack of term recognition. Go for it.

Will work for beer, parts and tools.

One more thing...... Get on Amazon.com and get a book in the Automotive section on GM transmissions. It is very detailed. It will help you if you get lost in the re-install. And recommend new things in the process.
