Tranny guru\'s...

As some of you know I recently was given a NV4500 by Sparky87K5. The tranny ran low on lube and needs a rebuild. The front bearing siezed and the input shaft snapped...[IMG] I have started disassembling it and doing an inventory of parts that need replacing. I have never had a standard transmission apart in my life and have been slowly figuring it out as I go.[IMG] Obviously this isn't the best way to go about this...[IMG]

Can anybody offer me some much needed info, advice or reference material for this beast? It seems most search results i get are just brag pages for guys that have swapped a perfectly good NV4500 into a Jeep...pretty pictures of the outside of the tranny but no hard info.

i dont know if this will help you or not, i use metacrawler.com and typed in nv4500 and there were several pages that might help you, one article mentioned that a 6th gear could be installed, sounds like a great tranny

You learn like I do, Rene. That how I became a certified NP208C expert, haha. You'll have to check on the year that that gear box was used, but GM service manuals are a great reference. Before I became heavy into wrenching, I checked out the 1981 GM light truck service manual. That thing has almost everything in it. I don't remember the other stuff clearly, but the t-case stuff I did. It has an entire exploded diagram of the cases, along with pictures of disassembly. If I get reeeeeeal bored tonight, I'll see what I can find.

I think it is a lost cause. Since you Canadians have exppensive disposal charges I should come up there and take it off your hands..... :)

I'll talk to my Buds but we don't have any NV4500s in the group so prolly wont be much help.

I would try heading over to your local library, and see if they have a Mitchell manual for the year and model that the tranny came out of. Most of the stuff is direct from the factory manuals, and you can usually copy the stuff out of the book. I usually start there, if I don't have a good starting point. HTH

Thanks Fred...I guess a trip to the library wouldn't kill me. The tranny is a 95 model. It was never in a 95 Chev truck though, Bill bought it directly from a Chevrolet dealer new...

I'll keep ya posted.

I like the library method... it's free[IMG], well not really, I gues taxes come into play. You might as well get something back for your money[IMG]

Rene, will PM you the ID tag #'s 'cause you'll need them to get correct parts. Should send it tomorrow after I get it from my toolbox at work. Almost forgot with vacation to Phoenix the past 5 days on my mind and all. Sorry guy.

Re: Tranny guru\'s...

No problem Bill. I've gotten some great links and I'm almost 100% sure I can bring this beast back from the dead. I'll snap some pics of the carnage for you...[IMG]

As far as I can tell these are the parts I'll need for sure:
Input shaft
Front bearing and housing
Fourth gear on the counter shaft
3-4 synchro...or parts of it.

The syncro uses a composite carbon fiber material in there somewhere. Apparently it melts when the gears glow red...[IMG]

Thanks again Bill!
