I am thinking of switching the 4 speed standard in my 83 to an automatic and was wondering if I would have to change the transfer case as well? That is if I stay with say the th350 instead of the 700r. I have never done a tranny switch on a 4wd so I am kinda to the conversion.

I don't know about the switch but, in my humble opinion I would give her a 400 trans. Those trannys are really bulletproof. That is If you do't have 4:10s.........js

You will need a different adapter and possibly a different t-case unless you swap out input/output shafts. And also you may run into driveshaft length and oke diameter problems.
