maybe this is a really dumb question, I cannot help it but I have to ask.

How can I from looking at a transfer case identify what flavor it really is (tags??, looks??)

I think I have a np203(chaindriven?) and would like to change to a np205(gear driven?)

any links or any information will be greatly appreciated

Easiest way to ID a 205 isby the little cover held on with 3 bolts that is to the right and slightly below the rear output. Here is a picture of it, the case is kind of greasy but you can still see it. This case is a fixed yoke, yours may have a slipyole, so don't worry about anything other than the cover with the 3 bolts for the ID.
