transfercase mount???

    I am looking for information on what the proper mounting of the transfercase crossmember to the frame is.

    I recently bent my crossmember and and frame at the attachment point. I suspect that it was improperly attached to the frame. On the drivers side it had 1" tubular spacers that were slipped over the bolts and positioned between the crossmember and the frame, on the passenger side it was bolted flat against the frame without any spacers.

    I looked at a 87 Suburban and it had the same type of spacers, but on both sides. They were slipped over the bolts and positioned between the nut and the crossmember.

    Also there are four holes in the frame on each side, which two of them should be used?

    Anybody know how GM put this thing together in the first place?

    My rig is a stock 1986 K5 Blazer, 4x4, 305V8, AT.

    I really don't know the point of the spacers either than to get frozen to the bolts and make life hell when you try to remove them. Actually I think it lets you use longer bolts when lining it up and then not having to crank all day to get it tight. The only reason you should have spacers sandwiched like that is to drop the transfer case in the event of a lift to maintain a proper drive line angle, it should done on both side of course. Hmm well, I suppose you could put a floor jack under the pan and have it hold the weight. I would say somewhere towards the back of the t-case but there's no where to put the jack that is real stable. Anyways put a jack on the pan, loosen those two bolts under the middle of the crossemember then undo the frame bolts and drop that sucker and fix it. Then do the reverse and put it back in.

    Stock the crossmember bolts to the frame directly, and the spacers go between the frame and washers for the bolts. Some people remove the spacers and put them between the frame and the crossmember to lower the transfercase. I recommend against this because of the small contact area the spacers have on the frame and crossmember. If you do make sure to keep the bolts tight, otherwise over time you will 'egg' out (elongate) the holes in the frame. I prefer to use a stack of wide washers or have a machine shop make spacers (which should cost about $10). Regardless, if you do one side, you should do the other so that the crossmember is level side to side. As for the two sets of holes. I believe it was for different factory combinations of tranny's and t-cases. Some combos (that weren't factory options) may even need to have new holes created (drilled). I know that my factory (1980) TH350C/NP205 combo were bolted to the set of holes closest to the front of the truck. Hope this helps.
