'78 K5 400sb 4x4 AT. not sure if TH350 or TH400. My parking stopper in tranny has wore out or broke or something. Is it hard to replace? Should I have to pull the tranny or replace it while on the truck? My K5 tries to roll away!
How can I tell if TH350 or TH400 transmission? shape of pan or somethin?

Bring the pan to the local autozone or pep girls they have pan chart to match your tranny up.

If it's the stock trans, then it is a Turbo 350. Sounds like your parking pawl is broken. [IMG] I'm not sure if you can replace it by just removing the pan or not.

Also check to make sure that the linkage hasn't slipped or is out of adjustment. If it's messed up the problem could be that the tranny isn't quite going all the way into park, even though the lever says it is.

Im not super familiar with GM trannys but I do know that on Fords you dont have to r&r the trans to replace the park pawl but you must pull the t case and extention housing to remove the pivot pin that goes through it.There also may be spring that holds the park pawl away from the park gear that that pin also goes through. Its been a few years since Ive had a GM tranny torn down but I dont think you have to pull the whole thing.

........but before you tare anything apart make sure you have propper shifter opperation outside the trans and if you dont find anything outside ,pull the pan and see what you can see in there.Good luck.
