i started experiencing problems with my transmission last week where it was having trouble switching gears. that led to not switching out of first gear and now it currently will not move in drive. it is a th400 and is in an 84 m1009. someone told me it was the governor but im not sure that that wouldnt allow you to not go in drive. anyone who has comments or info please respond.
    thanks

the first step would be a simple changing of the fuild and filter. a clogged filter can cause this.

second, make sure the kickdown cable is attached and functioning properly and put a new gov. in.

Last, your screwed, buy a new tranny.

    have a nice day.

There is no kickdown cable on a TH400 so dont worry about that.

Governor is driven off the output shaft. If the tranny mount move, it's not the governor.

Governor problems affect shifting, but do not prohibit movement if they aren't working correctly. (IE moves, but won't shift out of gear)

Similar problem here but with a 350. I put it in drive and when it shifts out of first gear into second nothing there. I havent driven it far since I noticed it so I was planning on doing the fluid and filter thing. It also is making a hissing sound. I was wondering about vacuum modulator? Guess I will have to crawl under it again.
