Transmission Won\'t Shift ***UPDATE PART 2***

My transmission won’t up-shift to second gear. When I attempt to accelerate, it will stay in first gear, and when I let off the gas it will drop out of gear altogether until the truck slows down, then it’ll go back into first – and only first. There is no unusual noise such as a “clunk” or any other type of noise. The fluid level seems to be fine and doesn’t smell burnt and does not look discolored. I can run through all gears – reverse, drive (first only), low 1 and low 2 without any problems. It just won’t shift to second (or higher). There was no warning whatsoever. The truck has been running fine up to now. Any thoughts as to what steps I should take are appreciated. Thanks!!

    ****UPDATE*****
Well – I just found out that my tranny is toast – worse than I thought. It’s gonna take a complete rebuild. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif I know – it’s been almost three months since it crapped out on me, but the holidays got in the way – so now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to deal with it. It’s gonna eat up my entire tax refund too!! /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif Oh well.....

    ****UPDATE PART 2****
    - converter was toast; /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
    - flywheel was toast; /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
    - governor was really toast; /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
    - cooler was toast; /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
    - front driveshaft locked up; /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
    - u-joint attached to aforementioned driveshaft - you guessed it - toast. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Shifts now like it's on a mission - strong and decisive! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I'm back on (off) the road now!! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Thats kind of weird because usually OD will go first until it works it's way down to first. How many miles are on it? Probably needs to be rebuilt. Unless the TV cable got way out of adjustment. Did you mess with anything under the hood before it did this?

High mileage = 183,000 +/-. I haven't been under the hood for a while. Replaced the parking brake cable earlier this sumer and that's about it.

Pull out the govoner and see if it has any teeth on the plastic gear /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif When it goes you will only have 1st and R. You can pull it without pulling the tranny so I would sugest that first. It is behind the round cover on the driver's side near the back.

I agree on the govenor, when the teeth strip off the plastic gear, it will cause the problems described.

Just remember, where all those bits of plastic go when the teeth strip though.

I agree. With a 700R4 that is generally just the tip of the iceberg.

    Re: Transmission Won\'t Shift

I really appreciate all of the responses guys!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif But what I'm hearing is that this tranny could possibly be toast /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif and that I should probably consider having it rebuilt verses putting a band aid on just the part that broke - would that be an accurate assessment? If so ... I'd need to have it done since I am not inclined to tackle such a project due to the lack of time, space, proper tools and experience. A man's got to know his limitations - tranny rebuilds are not within mine.

I guess my second set of questions now center on what this sort of job is going to cost me. My mechanic (who I've known and used for over 25 years) has referred me to a franchise tranny shop. My first inclination is to go with his recommendation, and just accept whatever it costs. My other inclination is to use the valuable information you guys have provided /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif and find the most cost affective solution.

I did a search yesterday looking for this particular problem and didn't find much. What I did find was a general range of costs to rebuild and / replace a 700r4, namely in the $500 to $1500+ range, /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif depending on if I go for a stock rebuild verses a performance upgrade. I really don't want to take a chance on a bone yard tranny, even though I have someone willing to help me with it (finding one and installing it). That would be the cheapest way out- but with few guarantees - if any.

Any other thoughts and recommendations are appreciated. Thanks !!! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Pull the governor and check it out this is easily within most diy's realm, if the teeth are gone replace it. Then drop your pan change the filter and the fluid, and drive it. It may die in 1000 miles it may die in 100000 miles, for the lil bit of money you would be out, id take the chance.

If I'm out in the woods and a mile from a dirt or paved road and the tranny craps out altogether, well - I'm not willing to gamble with that kinda hassle, no matter how little (or much) I spend. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

208,700 miles when mine finally died, i tried to take very good care of mine too with changing the fluid/filter regularly, had a cooler on it for awhile, and was doing the same thing or very similar to his when it finally went, would just shift from 1st to 2nd and no further, let off the gas and no engine braking capability, just kinda in a neutral state until you got back on it.
