UPDATED: so I now know this is an open carrier, but is it true that the carrier can only be used with the 3.21 gearing?

    Also, these are the numbers on gear: 2 GM 3992485 14 45 9 79

    Thanks,

Re: *PICS*what kind of carrier is this and gearing from 14 bolt rear*Pics*

Its an open carrier. The gears I'm not sure about. The way I interpret them is 14 divided into 45 equals 3.214, but I've never heard of that gear ratio. The 9 79 is manufacture date, Sept. of 1979. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me.

cant really tell from the pics. but those holes on the side of the carrier right next to the ring gear, with the big fat pins in them where the 2 halves bolt together, if there are 4 of them its open, 3, its a govlock. and srry but i dont kno ne thing about the numbers.

GM did offer a rare 3.21 ratio 14 bolt. I've been told that the housing is the same but that the carrier is exclusive to that ratio, never checked into it though.

Yep, there is a 3:21 ratio available in the 14BFF. I have seen one with my own eyes /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif. A co-worker has one sitting out on his farm. I was looking at purchasing it....until I figured the gear ratio. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I don't know about the specific carrier though. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
