Twin Stick 205 ?\'s

I'm sure many of you have converted your 205 to twin stick shifters and I am thinking of doing the same. A couple of questions: How do I go about doing this? Did you use the shifter for a Dana 300 or fab your own? and finally, how do you like it? My trnsfer case is on the bench, rebuilt and ready to be put back, so now is the time do do it.

I haven't done any thing like this myself but I like the idea. Here is a site with some info from an International Scout site. I don't know if it applies to an NP205. Maybe you can use it. http://www.binderbulletin.org/techlib/drivetrain/twinstik.htm

I have the 4wheel& offroad that tells ya how to do it, if your interested, let me know, and I can scan it over, but it will be a few days, I pick up my scanner monday. Course why would you want twin sticks, I thought about it, but its just more things to fiddle with. I can climb a tree if I want to, I dont see the need for it,, course thats just me,, I am pretty hard core, and have never needed to do that, I also am locked up front and rear with 1 ton stuff, so when in doubt,,, put' er to the wood,,

Being able to put it in FWD and pivot in tight trails, and it might help in slick, off-camber situations.

Well I have made one for a fella, he likes it, but I have so much stuff in my cab, I couldnt fit another shifter, my Blazer has everything about that there is, so who knows,, if I need to turn on a tight trail, and trust me thers plenty here in north idaho, I just pull it out of 4x and spin it around,, or I end up with rub rash,, or trail trophies(dents),, weehaahh

instead of one stick controling both shift rails it is one stick per shift rail. basically one stick per driveshaft. this allows you to put the front or rear in either range or neutral independant of what the other is in. so you could have rear in neutral and front in low or what ever combo you want. i guess if the shifters were close enough together that you could jam them both into 4lo at the same time on the fly like the stocker it might not lose you anything, but i am with the "thought about it cant see the why" crowd.

There's various situations where front wheel drive only would be good, low range in the rear only, low range in front, you name it - The earliest Jeeps had twin stick Spicer 18's from the factory - an excellent idea 60 years too early.

If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all[IMG]

Depends on where you wheel. Lots of places around Moab are steep and/or bumpy enough that you want to use low range. But the traction on that sandstone is so incredible that the drivetrain binds up in 4WD. Switching to 2LO, rear only is the hot ticket for getting around between the serious obstacles there. Turning a corner on that stuff with lockers at both ends is also a real mutha in 4WD.

Okay, I understand the use of 2 lo, in either end now.

But why would you ever want your front axle in low and your rear in high or vice-versa?

you wouldn't, the point is if your off road and its tracking sideways, pull the rear out into nuetral. and blip the front with it locked in, hence spinning the front around, with my dana 60 you could put it in front wheel drive only and do donuts in reverse, like a subaru, sometimes I could see the need, but for the most part, I just pop it into 2 high and blast the gas, I got the gears and drivetrain, so im not really worried about anything,,

It also helps to have individual control over the rear brakes, that way you can lock a rear wheel, and pivot around it. Individual parking brakes, or individual hydraulic cylinders, or even just a line lock on each rear wheel will do it. It's kind of a pain since the case is almost always bound up to where you can't shift it without some backing up, but I've been in places that were dangerous without the tight turning capability. It's just one more tool in the box.

Okay, I understand now. It's more about individual control than anything else.

Thanks for the explanation. I know that's something I'll never need! You guys go to some really terrible places to go wheelin'!
