Subject: Two Urgent ORV Issues Need Your Help

    1) HELP PROTECT NATIONAL PARKS FROM JET SKIS (Deadline Sept 30)

In April the National Park Service announced a ban on jet skis (also
called personal watercraft) in most National Parks, including the
Niobrara/ Missouri National Scenic Riverways in Nebraska and South
Dakota. Unfortunately, a vocal group of jet ski dealers is demanding
that the park scrap the ban and allow jet skiers to run their noisy,
polluting machines wherever they want. Bowing to demands from the South
Dakota's Representative John Thune, the NPS opened up a public comment
period on the jet ski ban on the Missouri and Niobrara Rivers. If the
jet skiers succeed in overturning this existing ban on the Missouri and
Niobrara, it would set a horrendous precedent for the entire National
    Park System.

ACTION: Please send an e-mail, letter, or fax to Park Superintendent
Paul Hedren by September 30th, urging him to uphold the ban on jet skis
in the Niobrara and Missouri National Scenic Riverways. Tell him that
jet skis are noisy, polluting thrill craft that are inappropriate in a
National Park where the preservation of water, wildlife, and natural
sites and sounds is the primary mission. You can send a letter on-line
from the American Canoe Association's action center web site at:
    http://congress.nw.dc.us/cgi- bin/alertpr.pl?dir=aca&alert=20

2.) HELP PROTECT COLOLRADO WILDLANDS FROM ORVs
    (Deadline Sept 22)

The Colorado BLM is accepting comments on its Recreation Guidelines,
which address problems caused by all recreational activities, including
ORVs. The draft guidelines are a good start towards the protection of
BLM lands from ORVs, but they need to be strengthened.

ACTION: Urge the Colorado BLM to adopt stronger controls on ORVs,
including limiting ORVs to designated routes and adopting a closed
unless designated open policy. You can send your comments directly from
    the Colorado BLM's web site:
    http://www.co.blm.gov/rguideline/recguidediscu.htm Or fax your
comments: (303)239-3808, Attn: Dennis Zachman. Or e-mail:
    mailto:dennis_zachman@co.blm.gov
