You married guys will get a kick out of this. So, we are thinking of doing a nice pool in the backyard. Not just any pool, but a major rip out the whole backyard, all kinds of bells and whistles pool. The kind that will have me robbing banks, rolling crack whores in the alley for their cash, dumpster diving for aluminum cans, and adding a paper route to my morning time. I'm a bit undecided on this major purchase and even though we are having all the different pool companies in to make bids, I'm still on the fence. Of course the missus is all for it. So, after one particularly heated conversation about what other fun things we could do with the money (quads for the whole family, timeshares, maybe a downpayment on a cabin, liposuction for Dad, etc.) she gets all "emo" (just had to slip that in) and throws a fit.

Ok, in the interest of marital harmony, I capitulate. We are on a tight schedule because summer is coming. So, I go out and start dismantling the very large and very nice deck I built a few years ago. I'm halfway through this when we have our last presentation/bid from the pool companies. Last night I ask her what she thinks. I get the blank look. The thousand yard stare. The look you get when you just dropped your cell phone in the toilet. The look you get when you realize that you have a major case of the runs and you are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. She has total sticker shock. All of a sudden she is having second thoughts. She is now parroting the arguments I was making days ago. So now I'm looking at the huge pile of lumber on the side of the house and wishing that I would've just sat on the whole thing a few days. Why is it women just can't seem to remove the emotion from the decision making process much earlier on?

Women, can't live with them, can't live without them. You know, it's a good thing we men can't blow ourselves, we would never get married, and we would probably never leave the house......

    Pools are expensive.

I merely "re-modeled" my existing pool (when I was still in CA) and the bill was something like $40,000!!!!!

That was with me designing and installing the pump/filter and heating systems myself.... It's a big commitment, and made much more difficult when the S.O. isnt' fully supportive of it.

However, if you can work through all that.....you will be amazed at how many friends you'll have once you are the guy with the pool. It IS nice having one, and if you design the filtering and flow rates correctly, it really isn't that much maintenance to keep it nice and clean.

How long have you been without it? Its a "nice" thing to have, but I think the money would be put to better use on the cabin, or a family vacation touring africa, austrailia, iceland, or Alaska.

The only victory in this battle for us men is death, and it usually only comes around after about 30-40 years of being together.

Reminds me of one of those Relationship Math quotes:

"Single men don't live as long as married men, but married men are more willing to die..."
