Does anyone know what its for? The only thing I've seen it do is get soaked and then dump water all over my distributor when I open it. Does it matter if I take it off? I don't really see why it would though...

I think it is there to cut down on engine noise. I dont know how much noise it suppresses or how much more noise you can hear without it though.

Hey, I took a portion of mine out to clear snorkle tube, and the portion that I removed showed on the top of the hood, due to the heat rising from engine. It faded the paint in a matter of about 2 months, and it looks funny as hell, cuz rest of hood looks good. Needless to say, hopefully you can learn by my mistake and not cut it out. I would say that it keeps heat from bakin the paint. Good luck.

Mine ripped the other day, and its in real bad shape. I wonder if I took it off and replaced it with dynamat or something if that would keep it from fading. Would using engine paint on the inside of the hood keep it from fading on the other side?

My understanding is that it is for fire resistance, but a member of my wheelin' club says that if it does actually start to burn it makes for an intense fire. I tore mine out of both trucks (1 fiberglass hood, 1 stock hood) and have had no ill effects. It weighed alot when I pulled it off and filled up a trash can--I don't miss the weight!

I think you can get new ones for reasonably cheap. I don't think I'd worry about it either way. Unless someone takes theirs off on a truck that has really nice paint on it (how many of use really do) I don't know how the difference would show on heavily oxidized paint. I have a feeling that its for paint insualtion, not sound, since as long as the sound isn't transmitted to the cab (IE the firewall) then it wouldn't matter. I'm going to leave mine on, since it's in good shape, and isn't hurting anything. If it were to rip though, I'd yank it out and not replace it. Just have to be real careful with them.
