:UPDATE:Fuel mileage with 87\' later TBI trucks?

I'm buying an 87' K5 blazer for the girlfriend and I will have to pay for some of her gas also(she goes to school full time so thats her job /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) and I am curious what kind of mileage you guys are getting with your TBI trucks.

It's an 87' TBI 350/700R4/3.73 truck with 31x10.50 BFG A/T's on factory aluminum wheels. I have heard 13 to 18 on average with these trucks but I am not sure.
I get 8 in town and 11 or 12 on the freeway with my 85' heavily modified K5 and hope the 87' will do much better for my wallets sake. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Also...are the aftermarket chips worth any real gains? opinions on them? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif
    Thanks

Re: Fuel mileage with 87\' later TBI trucks?

i have an 89 , i usually get combined 8mpg. if i pussyfoot it, i can get 11-12 on the freeway. thats with 33's and 3.73 gears. with a stock lift, 31's and a girl driving, you might get like 10 city, 14 highway. i wouldnt expect much better. some guy here is getting like 13 city and 18 highway, but he put alot of mods to the tbi to get it more efficient.
i've got a chip too, slight increase in power but you have to run premium fuel. better to leave the stock one in and run the cheap stuff.

Re: Fuel mileage with 87\' later TBI trucks?

I can get some pretty darn good gas mileage- 16.5mpg over 800 miles of highway with a 4" lift, 35" MT's, and 3.73's.

No engine mods, just headers, exhaust, and a K&N.

I can get 17, with stock tires on the same combo. It was almost 18 without the lift.

Again, I dont drive with a lead foot, only enough gas as needed to keep 65.

I have an '87 TBI 454 in my plow truck. Without the plow on, on the highway I was getting 6.75 mpg last I checked. I think I have something wrong with it.

im with Tim on this one on the 6.75 on the highway with a plow on it. think about it, the aerodynamics of the truck suck already, and then you try and push that extra mass of the blade though the air, milage is going to suffer considerably.

    I have a 89 350 3.73 33" MTs. Lots of TB mods. I get 16-18 freeway 12 city.
When I run my 31" street tires I get 18+ mpg freeway at 65 mph.
    Chips wont help MPG
A good tune up,Better exhaust, and improving the flow of the TB will better MPG.
Keeping the tires aired up good will help a lot too.

If she likes to drive fast, then she will get crappy mileage.

Face it, you are whupped and will get her whatever vehicle, AND keep the tank full....We've all been there a time or two. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Re: Fuel mileage with 87\' later TBI trucks?

When I fill up, it seems like I get about 20mpg. Once the gas gauge hits 1/2, it seems like 6 /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I get about 10ish with the stock 350, 3:73's, 33's and 4" lift. I got 11 with the 31's and no lift. Of course, my speedo is slow also so that could effect my odometer readings.
