Re: update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

From what I can tell...the console attaches to the floor using simple screws (no backing plates of re-inforcements) in the floor.

Not really the greatest mounting system, but it was cheap. I think when I re-do consoles and floor area, I might graft-in some thicker plating into that area of the floor, so I can actually drill-and-tap some stronger holes and use machine screws instead of sheetmetal screws....

Re: update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

    Bob,

    REALLY NICE! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I have a couple of consoles in my garage that I've yet to start "restoring"....one is the square hole seatbelt holder one, and the other is the round cupholder one. I still can't decide if I prefer "100% original" or "cupholder functional"....I guess having both means I don't have to choose...!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A question for BobK or anyone:

When doing repairs on a "textured" surface like these consoles, do you have any idea how to reproduce the texture in the patched areas? That is one of the things that's been holding me back on mine. I'd really like to know how that part of the restoration is done.

im looking at getting a tuffy console and that is the same thing i will prob ably do.that way noone can get into it unless they bust the top off or rip out the floor of my truck.reinforced at least it will not strip out the holes in the floor

Re: update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

What Greg said about the floor,it's just screwed in.I think I'm going to weld 4 bolts to the underside of the truck so I can just bolt it in.

As far as the texureing goes Greg.
Lay a piece of plastic wrap(Saran wrap or whatever) over a texured area of the console. Then apply what-ever compound you wish.Like plaster,J.B. weld or some type of a semi-liquid compund that hardens and will conform to the texure of the console. The plastic wrap will prevent it from sticking and you'd be able to peel the new texured template right off.
The areas I fixed were not worth the effort to me.But say you had a hole in the side or something like that,I think it would work great. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

    O.k. I'll post some pic's here.

The bottom had a hole and a major crack that went the length of the base of the console.

This is where the lid sits on.This cross piece was busted in half.I used J.B. Weld to fix all the cracks in the console.I bent up some 3/4" aluminium and rivitted it in place to help support this area.

Here the lid has been stripped to the orig. finish and is ready for paint.

I used 26 Gauge galvinized sheet metal to make plates for the bottom and the inside bottom. It covers the hole and will help to add stregth to the base.

The bend came out real well.

Here is the inside base plate cut and fitted.

Here is that plate inside the console.

painting things up with the black dye/paint I used
    [IMG]

On the bottom I rivitted the two base plates together, sandwiching the fiberglass bottom of the console between them. You can kind of see the rows of rivits in this pic.

The orig. wire that limits how far back the lid goes was missing.I went to my local hardware store and picked up some chain.Looks good and works well.

    The chemicals I used.
The majority of the 2 layers of paint were taken off with the middle can of aircraft remover(bought at Walmart)It worked well.I got it down to the orig finish useing Acetone and a toothbrush. The can on the left is the dye/paint I used(bought at my local auto paint supply). The can on the right is call Molecubond.I used it to redo my sunvisors.I could have used it on the console as well.

My cup holder was boken in 3 places.Again J.B.Weld was used. Here I've sanded down the excess J.B.Weld.

spraying the cup holder with the same dye/paint I used on the rest of the console
    [IMG]

    The finished product
    [IMG]

I purchased some clips for my "D"cell Mag Light at OSH(Orchard Supply and Hardware).I used existing holes in the back to mount the clips to the console.

And that's basically it.I've got more pic's but this give you a basic idea of what I did.
