**UPDATE - POSITIVE ID** Let\'s play...Name That Locker!

Ok, here's the deal, a friend bought a 3/4 ton Chevy Dana 44 that was supposed to have a Detroit Locker in it. We pulled the cover and found that it does have something in it but we can't identify it. I have searched the net for a couple of days and can't find anything that looks like it. The closest picture I found was for a Tractech Suretrac but by description that should only be for huge commercial axles.

<br>Please take a look by going to : http://community.webshots.com/user/nvrenuf_4x4 and look at the Parts photo album. Any help in figuring out this mystery would be greatly appreciated!!

All I can tell you is it doesn't look like a Dana Pwr-lock.....that is what I have in my D44.

It is supposed to be a Detroit according to the seller (no one from here, local guy) but it doesn't look like the D60 or D70 Detroits that I've seen BUT I've never seen one for a D44 - that's why I'm confused.

    Thanks

    Thanks for looking.

How do you like your Power Lock? Any steering issues? Does it beak a lot of axles? I just bought one off of Ebay for my front D60 that I haven't installed yet. I really like how beefy it is, I'm just a little worried that it will grip too good causing a lot of axle breakage.

    Thanks again!

once you break them in they steer 'OK'
I doubt they will cause axle breakage.
should be easier on axles then an open dif
I wanna go detriot to compare.

that dif looks strange with the pin sticking out the ring gear side.

The D44 diff is definetly strange! We're going to pull it out this weekend and disassemble it to see if it has clutches or what else on the inside.

    Thanks!

That does look similar to a full Detroit locker. I have a 10-bolt, not a 44, but I would think they would look similar. Here are some pics of the detroit locker for my 10-bolt >>

This is the rear one (c-clips), but the same locker is used for the front. It replaces the entire carrier. I haven't seen a D60 or 70 one, but I know this locker looks a lot different than most other lockers.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Let\'s play...Name That Locker!

I love the Power-Lock. I think it is the best way to go for the front. Well ARB would be sweet too but $$$$. Anyway I have had great success with my PowerLocks, I run them front and rear. The front is basically locked untill the torque becomes too great at the tire then the preloaded cluches will slip, barely! It is a super tight posi so on the street in 4x4 the front barks the tires when turning, sometimes the cluches do slip a bit to help but it is very tight so feels locked.
You can add or remove cluches to increase or decrease the amount ot torque neccesary to alow slipage. I didn't mess with the cluch packs when I installed it new and it is tight enough to keep both tires turnin even in a wheel up senario....
    Hope this helps

    Re: Let\'s play...Name That Locker!

Well, I did some more net searching and I found a picture of a Dana 44 Detroit Locker from an installation story. Our diff is definetly different than the picture I found. I have now posted the D44 Detroit Locker picture in the webshots album for comparison.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions!

that pin sticking out the side makes me think trutrac.
guessing that pin could be for the 'bias' gears to ride on. usually 2-3 of those things, no idea what they are actully called.
this could be called a detroit as it is a DyneerTractech product
of course the Glysen/Zexel/ torsion difs are the same basic thing

Remember that a Detroit will look diff depending on the application. A 14bff Detroit definately would look different, but its how it functions. Maybe the one in there is an older style Detroit? and thats why it looks different? They have been making them for years so who knows for sure.

I agree, that's entirely possible. My friend and I are going to pull it tomorrow and disassemble it to see what is inside. I never thought it would be this hard to pin down what it is.

    Thanks!

    Re: Let\'s play...Name That Locker!

I wouldn't mess with pulling it apart I would go for a drive after you put the axle in and see if the diff is limited slip or a positive locker. Also if it ratchets loudly or if you can't hear it around corners. But that is just me because I wouldn't be to comfortable tearing apart a carrier. because of all the things on the inside.

Re: **UPDATE - POSITIVE ID** Let\'s play...Name That Locker!

Just for the sake of knowledge... The differential I was researching is a Tractech Truetrac. I recieved an email from a guy at Tractech today positively identifying it by part number as a Truetrac for a Dana 44 w/ 3.92 + gears!!

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions!!
