check the ignition module, dist cap and rotor. Black is too rich or unburned fuel, so the problem is probably in the carb or ignition

Open up the air cleaner and see if the choke plate on the carb is disengaging........sounds like it's stuck closed and flooding out the engine.

It seems like it only does this on cold mornings is there any reason for that?

Before I answer any more questions I would like you to tell me what steps you go through when you start your truck on a cold morning..............

If it only does it on cold mornings, I would suspect the carb, mainly the choke....need to check to make sure that its not sticking in a closed position, or the the autochoke isn't keeping it too closed....don't panic it ain't the end of the world...it definitely a fixable item.

Well it was about 40 degrees here this morning not cold but colder than usual. I usually get in and start it up and wait about 5 minutes before I get going but this morning it justkept sputtering.

Do you set the choke before you turn the key?

Have you looked under your air cleaner yet and figured out if the choke is stuck on?

Make sure all your linkage is clean and moves freely. Grab a can of carb cleaner and spray the crap out of everything carb related.........I'm willing to bet, your choke is sticking a bit.

On the passenger side of the carb is the auto choke, if the choke isn't sticking and will open and close freely, you can try and adjust it, there is I think three screws that hold it in place loosen the screws do not remove them and rotate the choke case and see which way the choke moves down or closed then move it the other way...this must be done on a Stone cold engine...leave a crack between the barrel and the valve of about 1/8 inch , start the engine and see what happens if it sputters open it a tad bit more.....then wait and see if it kicks down and opens by itself. Or get a mechanic to do it for you.....nothing ventured nothing gained go for it!!!

Later and good luck...Canmore is right the designers of Fuel Systems call the Grim reaper for answers...he's forgotten more than we'll ever learn.

Sounds like your carb is loading up - Probably time for a rebuild.

If the shoe fits, get another one just like it

    Choke.
Electric control has proably given it up. $30 or so from most parts stores.
Before youi go and spend the cash take a test light and make sure it's getting power. The engine has to be running for there to be 12v there. There is a oil pressure switch behind the distributor (some it's above the oil filter If it's behind the distributort the oil presure gage or idiot light sender will also be there. the one with 2-3 wires is the one that works the choke. Single wire is gage or light) that will not send 12v to the choke unless the engine is running so you don't accidently cycle the choke. If no 12v then probe the wires and make sure you got 12v ther. no power then check the fuse in the fuse box marked Choke. If it's blown the Choke control may still be bad and drawing to many amps.
Before removing the Choke element from the carb you need to mark the angle it's at. Use the boss that the connector is on as you refference on the element. These are pretty consistant and you want to put the new one on turned the same way. That should be close to right and should run. Also pay attention to when you remove the element as th what point the wrap on the element engages the tab in the bowl. Has to be the same or the choke can jam.
While your at the parts store see if they have a book titled Rochester Tunning or something. It will be with the repair manuals. Great book on how to adjust the choke and set up the carb. Well worth the $14 to really Learn how the Quad works.

It's not my damn planet monkey boy!
