What kind of motor do they have? They have such a distinct sound and I have no idea what they run.

All the older gasoline ones have 4.3 chevy v6's. The newer ones are usually a cummins engine like in a dodge truck. I know some of the first diesels were powerstrokes but not many.

    Huh??

    Thats weird...

The UPS trucks around here have 300 cid Ford straight sixes,or a diesel of some sort, probably a Cummins 4bt ( I know the Fed Ex trucks use them),or a IHC diesel like ford trucks used....not sure about the 4.3 Chevy motors..never seen one in a UPS truck around here--but the only ones I get to see are those in the junkyards..maybe they use different engines in other parts of the country??.. ..or maybe all I've seen is older ones?..

The 300 Ford motors have a real low growl when lugging along...sounds like a train coming...and the diesels have the distinct clatter of a diesel..I can tell when a UPS truck is coming LONG before I ever see it!..

The new ones are Mercedes L5 turbo diesels in the Dodge Sprinter. They are fazing out the old gas ones.

And always thought it was weird that they compared the exhaust note of the old Vipers to that of a UPS truck. It really is pretty close! I think the next time my UPS guy comes here I will have to ask him to pop the hood for me. It does sound like it could be the 300 inline....

I flagged down the UPS guy and asked them what they used, becuase I was thinking they used the 4BTA. He said they haven't used 4 cylinders since '71, and now they all use either vortech v-6's or cummins 5.9's. That's just what the friendly guy in the brown truck told me. Man, I was hoping to get ahold of a 4BTA :doah:

I actually found out tonight they are not allowed to sell or junk yard The trucks. Im not sure about the drivetrain, but the bodies are actually destroyed. Same with FedEx. Fedex sold a plane and it still had all the markings, someone flew it to mexico, filled it with drugs and brought it back, And was then put in the drug lot of the airport.

Pretty sad, id love to lift the hell out of one.
