    Anyone else heard about this?

With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship, USS New York, has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center. It is the fifth in a new class of warship — designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft. Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section.

When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there.

"It was a spiritual moment for everybody there." Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up."

"It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? — 'Never Forget'

Sorry if a repost, hadn't heard anything about this.

I think they re showed it a few weeks ago because I remember seeing it recently. Pretty interesting story about it. I believe the only parts of the ship that was made out of the WTC was the Keel, but someone correct me if I am wrong as I sometimes am.

They said that the bulk of the WTC steel went into the very front of the lower bow where it bulges out (the sonar bubble?). But, WTC steel was used elsewhere as well but that front part was entirely WTC steel. One of the articles said that the workers would go by the bow section and rub it almost like a religious relic.

isent that called a 'bulbous bow'?

It reduces drag by forming a bow wave a little way in front of the actual bow.The bulbous bow forces a pressure wave in front of the ship and this greatly reduces the noise of the ship from engines, propellers etc, from passing ahead and being picked up by the submarines listening equipment.

    On the money.....

During construction the WTC steel was used to make assembly #1 which would be the bow/foc'sle........

For you non sailors that would be the "pointy end" of the ship:haha:
