Could having a bad distributor gasket be a sorce of vacum leak? You know the small disk that sits beneath the distributor?

This concerns a friend of mine's vehicle. It will only run at about 41 deg. retard. The distributor to #1 cylinder has been checked numerous times manually and electronically. It will run and idle at 12deg retarded like I'd like but the second you shift into gear the carb sucks air and dies, all other vacume lines have been checked. Retarded to 41 it will idle high about 1200rpm out of gear and idle around 750 in gear at idle. This is the only way I can seem to get this beast to run despite all carb adjustments....

82 305 HEI stock cam performer intake and quadjet carb....
