The vortec heads require a Vortec intake. Don't believe any of the current Vortec intakes are setup for egr, if emissions are a concern. Hot air choke as was typical on mid 70's chev trucks is gone too. The edelbrock performer does not have the provisions for it. Th vortec intake manifold is held on with only 8 bolts, two at each outermost edge. Not worth drilling the heads for an older intake

All you need is a new intake. GM and eldebrock both have a couple. I think there is one less accessory bolt hole, driverside if I rember right. But there worth it.

I didn't look at your profile to see what you drive but do you have fuel injection? If you have a TBI there are 2 answers to EGR. One wait a few more months untill Edelbrock come out with their TBI/Vortec intake manifold. Number Two get a Edelbrock Vortec Performer RPM intake manifold, the reason a RPM is it has a crossover passage under the carb mounting "pot" on the intake. You will need to flow coolant through this to keep drivability from being a issue (unless you live in a very warm state). Your fuel will have a hard time staying atomized in cold weather without this. To mount the TBI use the adapter that Chev. offered for the 454TBI setup (the didn't at first have a dedicated TBI intake for the bigblock). Linkage will be a issue too, I can help there too. You will not have a problem w/ compression, clearences or the like as long as you have the factory dished pistons. There are many other asspects but I can give you hand in these if you need it. I did this setup on my 88' along with a cam and custom burned chip. The chip you should do also. Also you will need new self-aligning rockers. Sounds like alot of work but its not that bad and the power to be had is worth it all. Hope this helps.

Displacement, cubes, and did you say you drive a riceburner???

Don't forget about the $100 you have to spend on center bolt valve covers.

I read an article in Super Chevy that said the vortec heads are a great performance street head. What kind of price did your friend give you?

Do us a favor and turn off caps lock, its considered yelling, like "I JUST GOT MY VORTEC MOTOR RUNNING AND ITS GREAT!!!"

They don't have provisions for a hot air choke either, so manual or electric choke is the name of the game. Buy an Edelbrock Performer Vortec,(unlss your truck is set up for high RPM power, in which case get the RPM) bolt the heads on, and call it done!
