As far as I know Vortec heads were first installed in 96

Vortec 350 didn't appear in trucks until '96. If it is in fact a 350, it's the same 350 TBI that was used from '87-'95.

Not a vortec. But if it is a half ton, it may have the early swirl port heads. They are similar to vortecs but with larger 76cc combustion chambers. They are better heads than the earlier FI heads but the intake manifold still sucks.

If you get it cheap enough any chevy parts are worth having. all you need is Vortec heads and manifold and yur good to go. a roller cam would be nice also the block is already tapped for the guide bosses.

Thye didnt use the vortec V6 until 93 0r 94. Your 86 would just have a 4 barrel on it. I know my 92 is just a 4.3 tbi.

No, GM was calling the 4.3's Vortecs WAY before 1993. I've seen '88 Astro's wtih "Vortec" valve covers on them. Still can't confirm what exactly that meant, if anything other than a marketing ploy, but I have seen pre-1996 Chevy information that mentions "fast burn heads", which are apparently the same crappy TBI heads with better combustion chamber shapes.
