I've been looking at the gutted dash of my 87, but I don't see where the VSS is. The cluster looks like a normal cluster... is it in there? I just wanna make sure that, if the TBI has one, I have it.

Check the back side of the cluster for a yellow box. (vss).

The sensor itself is on the tail shaft of the transfer case, at least for 90-91. I thought '87 was still using a cable for speed indication...?

Haze gray and underway...or blue, in my case.

I think 89 & up have the sensor in the transfer case. Prior to that the vss picks up the signal from the speedo head. The last vss I saw was a small yellow plastic box type deal(technical term) up behind the cluster.

Follow the small ribbon-type 3 conductor wire from the back of the speedo head (screws on w/1 screw right next to where the cable goes in). Its maybe 10" long, and leads to a small box (~3/8" x 1 1/2" x 3"), mine's a light green.
These type started in '82 or '83 on some trucks (ie if you have cruise or an ECU), and ran through '89. '90 and '91 have the sendor in the t-case.

Well, my 84 has cruise & an ECU for ESC on it.. soo, I don't need to get this sensor off the 87, or do I?
