I did a quick search and came up with nothing. My question is: Was the 700R4 tranny ever offered in a 3/4 ton p/u? A guy is selling a 83' k20, he says it has a 700r4 in it. I made a point of asking him again, he said its a 700r4. I though they only came in K5's and K10's.... Anyone know for sure?

I know someone who has a 700R4 in his 89 K2500. He bought it new in 89 and that is the original tranny which is still going good with 275,000 miles and a good amount of heavy pulling in its lifetime.

I have had 2. an 84 and an 85. Both also had the SF rear axel. All the trucks I have had with a 14ff were all th400 or stick.

A friend of mine has a K30 with a 700R4 in it and his dad has the same year K30 with a 454 and a 400.
I think he said something about the 700 one being a special order truck.
I certainly wouldn't want a factory 700 in anything over half ton.

Maybe the ones that came with the 700R4's were light duty 3/4 tons. Like the 89's, they had 6 lugs but were rated at 3/4 ton.

    Dunno, this is a 1 ton with a 14FF in it, 2wd crew cab dually, 350 and a 700R4.
Really weird in my book, but what do I know.

TJ, are those taillight retainers factory too? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i have seen a number of K20 trucks with 700R4s in them when i was working in the dealership, and GM does, or did list parts for a K2 700R4.

    Well, I don't have any pickup brochures for '83, but for 1983 Chevy and GMC list a "4-Speed Automatic/OD" for both 2WD and 4WD 3/4-ton (i.e. including K/20) Suburbans.

Since the 4L80E didn't come out until 1990, I'd say yes, the 700R4 could have been in an '83 3/4 ton, unless there was another 4-speed OD auto tranny.

More details about powertrains from the General himself on my brochures page .

yes they did come in k20 also, just not a ton of them, mostly k20 got 350 and 400 trans, alot of shorty 400's with bolted-on style output yoke in 81-up with the SF 9.5" 14 bolt(C-series anyways)

but some saw a 700r4, starting 82 of course, for all models
