what do these 10 bolt gear numbers mean.

    I need to know what ratio my front end is so can anyone tell me what these numbers mean that were takin off my ring gear. here goes: 398483112411077 /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

    I assume,

    398483112 is the casting number

    41 10 is the ring and pinion tooth count

    77 is the year

    41/10 = 4.10


    1977 4.10 gears

    That's assuming that they haven't been changed by the PO.

    those are the numbers taken off the ring gear itself

    Not quite...

    The last 8 numbers tells the whole story. 12 41 10 77. Date of manufacture is 10/77, 12 pinion teeth and 41 ring gear teeth. Ratio is 3.42
