What do you guys think about the computer I\'m building?

I just finished ordering all the compenents I need.
For a total of just $397 (incl. shipping) I got:

350 Watt ATX case
16x IDE DVD ROM
64MB AGP video card (plain VRAM, not DDR)
ECS K7VTA3 Motherboard
1600 XP+ AThlon CPU
256MB PC2100 RAM
80GB IBM IDE HD 7200rpm

I'll take that stuff and use my current keyboard, 20" monitor, CDRW, etc.
Think I got a good deal?
My current computer is a 233 Mhz K6 I built several years ago. It chokes doing almost anything.

Sounds nice, but I would have gotten more RAM. I've found that processor speed isn't nearly as important as having alot of RAM, unless you're doing 3d graphic design or doing some serious number crunching with it. My primary system at home is only 1gHz but has a gig of RAM and the thing is plenty fast for everything I do. Sounds like a cool system, but to get the most out of it you're going to want at least another 256MB of RAM. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hopefully the prices are coming down more on DDR memory. I imagine they will since there is better faster memeory out.
I paid basically the same amount for the Athlon 1600+ and 256M PC2100 RAM. I really wanted the 512, but I was really trying to stick to a busget and figure out cost/performance ratio. I could have spent $1000 and got a computer 15% faster, but I really tried to bargain hunt.
What I'm hoping is that when I get the parts here and assembled, I'll be able to use it for my purposes and by the time I can't stand having only 256, the 512 or even better the 1024s will be reasonable. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Get more RAM down the road and I would have steered clear of the ECS mobo.

I'm building one as we speak but I'm going with the ASUS A7N266-c, the nvidia chipset is awesome and overclocks really well.

My first PC was a IBM PCjr. We upgraded it to 640kb of memory (no hard drive) and got the color screen, we were the cool kids, I tell ya what. I remember when my buddy's Dad got the latest IBM machine, it was a 33mHz machine and it SMOKED compared to ours.

MAKE SURE!!!!!

You get a processor that is retail boxed, not the OEM VERSION. Trust me I've seen quite a bit of problems with the OEM version processors. They may be a couple more bucks but it's well worth it having something that won't crap out on you the day after you install it.

Sounds like a decent machine for the buck. I would like the other guys suggest going to at least 512mb of ram.

Good luck.

I hate to go againt the flow, but I think you'll be fine with 256Mb, unless you're planning to run XP and edit lots of graphics and AV. I run a couple new 1.5GHz machines at work with 128Mb (I didn't order them, corp did!) Win2K/OfficeXp. They capture video, edit audio, edit video, play video, etc. fine. I have guys using 200Mb powerpoint presentations without a complaint. My laptop is a 1.3Ghz with 256Mb, and I don't even notice a stutter until I have more than a dozen large graphics open for editing. Ram is cheap now, but if you're shooting for budget with performance, save the $150 and you'll be fine with 256. Heck, I took a 256 dimm out of my home desktop a couple weeks ago and my wife hasn't noticed...

I did notice, however, as I just started playing with Linux, the gui runs like a dog with 1 leg on a 300MHz/128Mb machine...

if you're going to run xp, you need to get 512 mb of ddr as windows xp itself takes a whopping 128 megs of ram

i personally would go with a ddr video card...especially if you're going to do much gaming, but for the price you're getting a good deal

Re: What do you guys think about the computer I\'m building?

That computer will smoke obviously.
But what I don't get is why buy it now.
The computer I'm building now would have been $2000 a year ago.
The computer you're building is $1500 now...and will be $500 in a year.
What do you plan on doing this year that neccessitates the grand? That is the question I kept asking myself while shopping. It is tempting to want another 100 Mhz or another 20 GB, but will you use it or do you just lust after it in a way only a geek can lust /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
I also don't buy the latest video card or games....because I can't see $400 for a card and $80 for a game, when you can have the card for $100 and the game for $10 later.
I'm not an early adopter.
Pardon me while I go finish my game of Pong...

Re: What do you guys think about the computer I\'m building?

Get a 7200 RPM HDD...

The system I'm in the process of building.
AMD XP 1800+ (runs at 1.53 GHz, Overclocking it to 1.7) / Thermal Take Volcano 7 HSF
ASUS A7N266-C (The Nforce chipset is sweet. Just wish I could afford the new NForce2 board when it is released in about a month)
512MB PC2100 DDR
40GB 7200 RPM HDD
Gainward GeForce4 Ti 4200 (Overclocked to the speed of a Ti 4600)
Integrated 5.1 dolby digital included with the ASUS mobo
Lian Li PC-7 case (my baby) complete with window kit, toggle switch for red neon / black light
420w dual fan power supply

I don't think I missed anything.
