Hey, I'm putting a 465/205 combo in my truck and I'm gonna run either 36 or 38" tires when i get it in. What kind of gear should i run to still be able to run 65-70 on the highway and have the engine at a reasonable rpm? i'm gonna run 16.5" wheels so figure that in if it's a factor.

    I've got 4.10's with the SM465/208,38" tires.I like it,plenty of highway power.Some will suggest 4.56...might be better.The K/5 is heavy,but I've lost the top,tailgate,half the doors,stripped interior,A/C&heater.So that is a factor.Go with 4.56 or even 4.88's...you can always get larger tires!!!Mike

haha, that would be nice. what kind of rpm are you running on the highway? i want to keep the rpm's kinda low cuz my truck has the aerodynamics of a brick (mostly part to the HUGE front bumper).

If you're going to run 33" tires then I'd say either 3.73 or 4.10s.

it's no prob since we're on the same subject. So 4.56's and 38's i should be around 2500 rpm's or lower?

I've been running the 465/205 and 4.10s on 38s for 3 years now. It works fine, not worth changine, runs about 2300RPM on the freeway. If I were to swap gears in for this setup I'd probably go with 4.88s but, if you want to run 70 at low RPMs I'd go with 4.56s. Like I said, 4.10s are fine, but 1st gear (not granny) bogs just a little bit coming off from a stop, so 4.56s would be better.

Not to hijack your post, but since people reading this are thinking about the subject anyways I'll ask for opinions on what gear I should go with after getting my 14b/D60 combo in. I'm going to be on 38s until they wear out, then go to 42s. I'm leaning towards 5.13s, they're going to suck until I get the bigger tires, but I want to be ready for the bigger tires. I've done all the calcs and such, just looking for personal experience. I don't feel a need to go faster than 65 in the truck, so speed on the freeway isn't a huge issue. Not a DD either, it's only driven on the street to get to trails, but sometimes as far as 200 miles to get to Pismo. What is the maximum RPM that is safe for a sbc to turn for extended periosds on the freeway, and at what point will mileage start to drop considerably?
