    what is \"backspacing\" ?

i have been reading many posts with fitting 15" rim on 3/4 tons, as i plan to do, and backspacing comes up a lot. is that how far the wheel/tire will stick out? would a 4 1/4 backspacing stick out further than a 3 1/4? or is it the other way around? any other info explaining it would be great :)

    thanks
    josh

The less BS the more it'll stick out.
