My opinion...700R4 is the worst. TH 350 is good, TH 400 is the best of the automatics. 4L80(E) is the best for an overdrive automatic.

Standard tranny's...hard to go wrong, the SM 465 is bombproof. The NV4500 is as strong but is an overdrive 5 speed.

There will be lots of people that say the 700R4 is good...believe it at your own risk[IMG]

Rene the 700r4 from 87 and up are a decent trans. Alot of guys here have them with well over 100,000 miles on them. The ones up to 86 though are junk.

Cool...

Glad to hear you've had good luck with yours. For some interesting reading do a search on 700R4's...you should have about 2000 hits from the last year or so, and not many are stories praising it's strength or inexpensive cost to rebuild.

The 700r4 in my burb (87) let loose at 58,600 mile :( On the other hand the one in my Jimmy (86) lasted 115,000 miles. I think the only reason the burbs didnt last is I bought it at 58,050 miles and never had a tranny sevice, and I tried towing the Jimmy on a trailer with it. As for the strongest th400 or 480LE (th400 with od). Th350 and 700r$ are the same strength, its just the od in the 700r4 is really weak and thats why they go bad. If you go 700r4 just use od on the highway not in the city and only above 55 mph.

I am with tRusty on this one. nothing like an oil change with gear pieces in the pan on an 'updated fresh' 700r4.
as for the manuals i think you have to go 6 speed before any of them could be called good. durable yes, but they are a pain to drive. dont get me wrong i will never own another auto vehicle

No truck before '91 or so had a 4L80E. No straight axle Chevy ever had one. No K5 ever had one. Only '91 or so and newer 3/4 and 1 ton trucks get the 4L80E, along with certain 1/2 tons, like the Diesels.

IMHO....... it depends. I know, It's not a straight answer, but really, how will you be using it? Overdrive is great, if you need it. A TH400 is a good one, then a TH350 can be built stronger than a stock TH400. There's some options, just depends on what you need it to do....

You dont want my opinion on a slush box. Does he Rene?!

I have a good one now, but only after pulling it out and having it redone, lets just say numerous times.

The 350 is a good tranny, the 400 is better, but takes more power to run, and has a lesser 1st gear ratio than the 350. The 700 IMO is a great tranny as long as you dont leave the pavement, or attempt to tow a heavy trailer. Just my past BAD experiences w/ the 700 in my dads truck. There is nothing like being stranded on the side of the interstate for 6 hrs in Fla during the summer, mid day, to leave you a a bad opinion!

I know how you fell I sat on the side of the road from 8:00 till 3:00 when the tranny let loose in the burb. As for the strongest tranny a powerglide is the strongest but has a terrible low gear and its only two speed but is indestructble.

The day we broke down was in Mid July and the news had just said the temp was 106!! [IMG] We were there ALL day! And Yes it was VERY humid that day. Ill bet the temp index was above 120.

The 'Glide is stout no doubt about that. But as you said the 1st gear bites and I dont like a wide gear spread. Perfect for racing tho.

My 94 S-10 Blazer had a 4L60E that lasted 158,000 miles. The problem was that it let go 300 miles from home in West Texas where there's nothing for about 80 miles. My 89 Burb's got 185,000 miles on it, but I think it's been rebuilt. 700R4 is a great trans, just not in heavy vehicles. Get a VERY large tranny cooler for it and it'll last longer. The TH400 is awesome. My dad's 67 C-10 has one and it's indestructable.

Since everybody is bashing the 700r4 as usual I will add this, what trans is in the UAV and in the ORD test vehicle. Yes both have a 700r4 and both have been used hard and the UAV has like 190,000 on it. Just thought I would through this little worm in the mix.[IMG]
