Ok, so the frontend in my truck came out of a 74 K20. I have a spare set of shafts out of a 73 K20. Found out tonight that one of my ujoints was shot in the drivers side, so White-Rhyno took my front axle apart. Well, the shaft that came out was WAY skinnier than the spare 73 shaft. We figured, cool, bigger shaft... put it in, and it won't turn???
What is up w/ this??? I thought that a D44 shaft was a D44 shaft???

i was always under the influence that they were all the same. You should see the size differnce in the axles. The stub shafts looked identical. I cant figure out the problem either.

na, its open. Turns fine util you tighten down the spindle. So its binding behind the spindle. There was a spacer in there, i took it out, did nothing. Though about pulling the seal out of there too but i dont think thats it. Nobody else has had this problem?

You could take the spindle out of the 74 and put it in the 73 and that should work..

Mike would probably be kinda pissed if I did that, since the 73 spindles are on his K5!!
Has anyone else had trouble swapping D44 shafts????

There was "first gen" and "seccond gen" D44 axles, the first gens have smaller axles, u-joints IIRC, bearings and maybe even brakes. Change occured in the early 70's, I know thatK30guy knows the specifics, if he happens to see this.

Ryan B. just went through this, he had to change just about everything from the knuckles out except for the brake caliper bracket.

So wouldn't it stand to reason that if first gens were small and 2nd gens were big, that if the 73 had big axles that the 74 should too? Because it is the other way around...? Crap.
Maybe that 74 didn't have the stock front end in it???
