i've got a problem. my two year old son is starting to talk. he knows the difference between cars and trucks (momies car, dadies truck). now he is starting to point at vehicles and say either car or truck. i try to keep him straight on what is a car and what is a truck, but with all the "crossovers" it gets him pretty  .

so what constitutes a "truck" for you?

    what is a "car"?

im thinking the federal government has several things that defines a truck, like flat cargo area, ground clearance, there are several more, but cant seem to think of them.

according to mikey, some of them are...and i would have to agree. i may not like them, but at least the engine sits in there the "right" way.

unlike FWD cars converted to AWD and then have boxy body put on it. but is classified as a truck, because of the cargo floor/awd/passenger capacity. still not a truck, but is called one. (honda ridgeline).

Haha, ok honestly, to me a truck is body on frame construction, a part time t-case or at least one that locks (thinking of the 203), and is constructed with at least some work or towing in mind. From my point of view, the new crossover utes aren't really trucks. They're more like lifted Subaru's if you ask me.

Just take your boy home and show him your K5 and make sure he knows that it's a real truck, if he gets that much, he'll do fine. :D

To be a truck it has to be able to carry a 4'x8' sheet of plywood flat in the bed. (sorry nerraw117, just had to antagonize you some more).

Actually, it has to be body on frame, no questions asked, have a useable cargo area, and ride like a tank. Any (dont kill me) SUV made after 91 isnt a truck, b/c the SFAs went away, and lost pretty much any utility use, atleast IMO.

thats pretty much a truck in my mind. Its got a real frame, real axles, can have 2wd counterparts, but needs to have a 4x4 with a parttime t-case AND low range. Some work use was in mind while building it (although most can't withstand long term hard use before the bedsides fall off, but atleast itll carry a 4 wheeler and can tow a boat..at the same time).

    three criteria, for me anyway:

    1) body-on-frame design
    2) a real t-case.
    3) a cargo area that dirty crap can be put in

last one sounds silly... but lots of weird station wagons might sneak by otherwise. **** that. If you can't throw an oily old engine block in the back without the wife crapping her drawers, it ain't a truck.

    body on frame
    open cargo area
carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate shut
    2 doors (no extended cab)
can't haul more than 3 people and not get hassled by the cops
    V8
a transfercase or SFA does not make a truck a truck, there are plenty of 2wd trucks that are trucks.

this makes a truck a real truck to me, everything else is just a wannabe

ya i know they are classified as trucks, but come on, if ya go out and buy a new tahoe or burb, are ya even gona think about getting the sucker durty? i wouldnt like the idea of getting durty something that costs that much, that is if u dont buy a striped down work model, if they even allow that in suv form anymore

    Definition from google:
A truck is a motor vehicle for transporting goods. Unlike automobiles, which usually have a unibody construction, most trucks (with the exception of the car-like minivan) are built around a strong frame called a chassis. They come in all sizes, from the automobile-sized pickup truck to towering off-road mining trucks or heavy highway semi-trailers.
